Vocaloids: A Vocaloid album, Vocalogenesis, has hit the number one spot in Japan’s national album charts. The Oricon charts ending for the 18th of May listed the Vocaloid album “Exit Tunes Presents Vocalogenesis feat. Hatsune Miku” as the top selling album, either demonstrating that concentrated otaku buying habits are the stuff marketers dream of, or, more flatteringly, that Vocaloid music is earning mainstream appeal. The tunes in question will probably be familiar to Vocaloid fans.

A female teacher is alleging she was cowed into submission and then sexually enslaved by one of her students.

The teacher, in her forties and working at a Chiba prefecture high school, claims she was the victim of a male first year pupil.

It is alleged that for three months in 2009 she exchanged 657 emails with the boy, as well as giving him lifts in her car and taking him out to dinner.

She also reports late night meetings with the boy, in which he requested she kiss him – she obliged.

The boy withdrew from the school for unrelated reasons, and she was later to claim that he had enslaved her:

“I was controlled by my student, I didn’t know what he’d do to me if I didn’t go along with his demands. I’m the victim of indecent assault!”
The prefectural board of education disagreed and punished her for abuse of trust with a disciplinary pay cut, though only 10% for 6 months.

Just whether this is a genuine case of a schoolboy sexually enslaving his teacher or merely one of a teacher trying to get herself off the hook by claiming she was being raped is an interesting question.

Square Enix:
Interviews with the developers of Square Enix’s new Nier franchise reveal a bizarre development saga in which arguments over whether western audiences could stomach a typical girly JRPG lead eventually lead to the company making two versions of the game.

Square Enix’s new “Nier” franchise launched with two games, Gestalt (PS3/360) and Replicant (PS3), each with radically differnet character designs for the hero; however only Gestalt was released in the west, as “Nier” – comparisons of the two attracted some attention.

The interview concerning this odd decision included publisher Square Enix’s Executive Producer Yosuke Saito, and developer Cavia’s Nier director Taro Yoko:

Saito: We were initially planning an Xbox 360 target, which we expanded to PS3 multiplatform afterwards. However, the production process turned out to be quite storied.

Yoko: At first we were just doing the youthful protagonist version (which became “Replicant”), but Square Enix started taking talking about international markets during development.

Yoko: In fact, an argument erupted at Square Enix’s Los Angeles studio, over whether a thin looking male character [hereafter translated as “girly”] was possible for the game. For the North American consumers, it was decided to provide a macho main.

Yoko: A heated discussion ensued once the American and European staff were gathered to discuss it. It was said that “A slender and girly protagonist like this couldn’t possibly swing a huge sword like that, it’s ridiculous.” Certainly, if you look at American games it’s always muscle bound mains who look like they play American football.

Saito: We thought that as it’s a new IP, it really must sell, and we were persuaded [by the Japanese staff’s desire to make a girly lead] – we opted to leave the Japanese version with the girly character, and instead make two different versions.

Saito: We did realize that not all international audiences are the same though – it was thought that Replicant [the girly version] might be suitable for the French, as they have a greater appreciation of Japanese culture.

Yoko: That meeting was pretty amazing. A lot of people were arguing for making only the macho old guy version for cost reasons, and we [the Japanese developers] were saying “But if we don’t make a girly version we’ll lose heart and it’ll take even longer.”

Saito: As a result, the Japanese PS3 version only became the girly version, and both PS3 and Xbox 360 international version were the macho old guy versions.
Curiously, the obvious choice of eschewing the entire “Epic vs Enix” problem by just making universally sexy Kainé the protagonist seems not to have occurred to them, although considering the approach they took to depicting her in the US comics this is perhaps for the best.

The obsession Japanese RPG publishers have with supplying western audiences with its crude interpretation of the muscle bound heroes they see as key to the success of American games seems almost pathological – Square Enix actually made two games rather than have to risk releasing an insufficiently masculine lead to supposedly testosterone loving American audiences.

Unfortunately for both supporters and detractors of macho protagonists, the Nier games have received mediocre reviews and would likely have sunk without trace were it not for the cunning inclusion of futanari Kainé – finally proving whether western audiences (apparently shorthand for “American audiences” amongst RPG publishers) really can’t stomach girly androgynous protagonists will have to wait.

More sinisterly, they tell fans that illegal uploads allow even dirty foreigners to get their hands on Japan’s arts, which could encourage more censorship, as ever missing the point that it is Japanese extremists pushing for a ban in pursuit of their own interests.

The rest of their missive to lolicon pirates runs thus:

Illegally uploading magazines or manga is an unforgivable betrayal of manga culture. To protect lovely 2D girls, you mustn’t do it!

Illegal uploads are really getting out of hand!

If you thoughtlessly spread Japanese ero-manga overseas, you may cause needless international friction due to the differences in expression. In the worst case, it might cause manga censorship. Minors might see them too.

Illegal uploads are akin to betraying your otaku brothers, and are practically robbery. Whether you have money or not, uploads bring a danger of causing others to forget the value and importance of manga.

By damaging sales of manga you decrease the morale of mangaka – won’t they just think “If I’m not going to be rewarded, why even bother?” Some creators have become so discouraged by the prevalence of illegal uploads they had to stop writing. The environment which allows the creation of 2D bishoujo is really under threat!
Just whether the magazine’s child fancying readership can be relied upon to maintain the ethical standards LO seems intent on encouraging remains to be seen, although sadly they probably can be relied upon to respond favourably to a call to xenophobia.

Hikikomori:
The Japanese government has published research suggesting 80% of the nation’s hikikomori may be mentally ill, with two thirds of those diagnosed having such serious conditions as schizophrenia or mental retardation.

A research group from the Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare cooperated with psychiatrists working at 5 mental health treatment centres over several years. They examined hikikomori cases involving subjects aged 16-35 who approached the centre for assistance.

Approximately 80% of the cases resulted in a firm diagnosis, and of those a third involved mental conditions such as schizophrenia or anxiety disorder, all of which were considered to require medication.

A further third involved mental retardation and developmental disorders.

The remaining third were considered to have generic “personality defects” or “maladjustment,” and were prescribed treatment centred on counseling.

Researchers guess there may be as many as 260,000 child hikikomori in Japan, and are urging that they receive attention from mental health professionals lest they develop into lifetime hikikomori.

The wider implications of even conducting such research suggest the government may be interested in addressing its inconvenient hikikomori problem by redefining what has traditionally been seen as a social phenomenon as a medical condition, an approach which could perhaps eventually culminate in involuntary treatment for hikikomori.

Hatsune Miku fans have been enraged by the decision of Japan Rail East to throw out the top voted names for its new E5 Shinkansen, which included “Hatsune,” instead picking the name which came 7th with just 2% of the vote.

JR put the naming of its new locomotive to the vote, and the train soon captured the attention of Miku fans with its familiar green styling, causing them to flood the poll with “Hatsune” votes.

In the final count, 150,000 votes in all, “Hatsune” came second, with first place going to “Hatsukari,” the name of a scrapped train, likely block-voted by creepy train otaku.

However, organisers ignored these and selected “Hayabusa” (“Falcon”), which came 7th with only 3,129 votes, saying they liked its “sense of speed” and its “friendliness.”

The lascivious behaviour to be undertaken by Japan’s precocious schoolgirls takes the form of an inexplicable act of schoolgirl exposure, the girl in question apparently demanding $60 for a glimpse of her precious pantsu.

The incident reportedly took place in Wakayama prefecture as a middle-aged area resident was walking about town; he was approached by what appeared to be a middle or high schoolgirl. He was shocked to find that instead of striking up a conversation, the girl instead struck up skirt, laconically telling him “5,000 yen.”

All he could get out was “What are you doing?” before the girl had trotted back to her two waiting friends and left the scene. Whether a new marketing ploy for her pantsu, a random act of exhibitionism or a half-conceived act of extortion, nobody can say. ............

Racist Japanese have bullied a Chinese Vocaloid fan into deleting his Hatsune Miku MAD, all because he had the temerity to have the virtual idol sing in Chinese.

The song in question, 月・西江, was shaping up to be quite popular prior to being deleted. After uploading to NicoNico Douga, he was subjected to the usual deluge of racist comments which await anything China or Korea related coming to the attention of 2ch or Nico.
The storm of negative comments soon discouraged the uploader, a 20-year-old student from China’s southern province of Guangxi, and he felt he had no option but to remove the video, saying in Japanese: “Thank you all for your support. But rather than preventing everyone from getting along thanks to this video, it is perhaps better I delete it.”

Of course, many Japanese were disgusted by the antics of the hyper-xenophobic fringe which constitutes much of the userbase of 2ch and NicoNico Douga – unfortunately their words of encouragement came too late

The US Air Force is less than pleased with Sony for removing the PS3’s Linux support, although unlike most Sony critics it does actually use the OtherOS feature, in a supercomputing cluster of PS3s which it complains is now doomed by a lack of replacement units. The US Air Force Research Laboratory built a 53 teraflop cluster of 336 PS3s in 2009 by way of a test, and then added a further 1,700 PS3s in early 2010 after being satisfied with the results. It claims the PS3 cluster solution is much cheaper than the conventional alternatives. The Air Force Research Laboratory now publicly laments the decision by Sony to remove Linux support, as although it does not connect to the PlayStation Network or use games, it does make it impossible to replace broken units: “This will make it difficult to replace systems that break or fail. The refurbished PS3s also have the problem that when they come back from Sony, they have the firmware (gameOS) and it will not allow Other OS, which seems wrong. We are aware of class-action lawsuits against Sony for taking away this option on systems that used to have it.” Sony’s supposed advertising of such alternative usages of the PS3 has been mentioned in the lawsuit, so the Air Force may yet find itself drawn into the fray. Sony for its part is probably happy to be rid of its research customers – console hardware is usually sold at a loss, with profits coming from software sales, so from Sony’s perspective cluster users are little better than parasites taking advantage of its subsidised Cell processors. The PR benefits of such usage may well be vastly outweighed by the cost of such subsidies. Equally, cheapskate research institutes cobbling together supercomputers from subsidised home consoles are hardly in a position to complain – on the contrary, the Air Force appears happy to suck up the loss and has no intention of stopping with the PS3: “The gaming and graphics market continues to push the state of the art and lowers the cost of High Performance Computing, FLOPS/WATTS per dollar. This is important for embedded HPC, our area of expertise. The HPC environment is rapidly changing; leveraging technology that is subsidized by large consumer markets will always have large cost advantages. This gives us the experience (lesson learned) to develop HPC with low-cost hardware, benefitting the tax payer, Air Force, Air Force Research Lab while utilizing limited DoD budgets.”

Belle mangaka Xià Dá, suddenly projected to idol status after photographs of her came to the attention of online otaku, has made it clear she is unhappy that people might judge her by her looks and not the quality of her manga

She is less than delighted with the huge fuss made over her loli looks (she is 28) – “I’d rather people not make a fuss over my looks,” she says.

As a proud and professional mangaka, she seems aghast at the prospect of becoming a mere pin-up for the onanistic attentions of otaku admirers: “My readers have been with me for 5 years. It’s got nothing to do with the fuss online.”

She is of course correct – her translated manga is now serialised in Ultra Jump, and it seems few had any idea what she looked like until very recently

She is also said to be a complete otaku with no interest in anything apart from manga – she spends most of her time drawing manga, eats meals at her computer and reports discomfort at camera flashes thanks to her degraded eyesight.

A lawsuit has been filed against Sony for its removal of the “Other OS” feature in a recent PS3 firmware patch.

The class action lawsuit, of course filed by an American, alleges Sony advertised the Other OS capability as “an important PS3 feature,” and quotes Sony marketing hype as evidence of this.

The plaintiff claims he bought his PS3 in 2007 largely as a result of this Other OS functionality, and that the recent 3.21 firmware disables this functionality, constituting “breach of contract,” “breach of the covenant of good faith and fair dealing,” “unjust enrichment,” and violations of California consumer protection laws.

The scope of the suit is broad – all US PS3 owners who bought their units between 2006 and 2010 and did not resell their consoles – and damages sought are predictably huge: all “unjustly retained” profits and a full or partial refund for all buyers affected.

The only indication so far of how much is sought is the “in excess of $5,000,000″ stated in court documents.

The lawsuit probably hinges on whether courts accept that Sony’s firmware update is a voluntary process with no impact on previously released consoles (and one which is covered by the EULA users must agree to), as Sony is likely to insist, or whether Sony has indeed established “a vast and sticky web of restrictions” which “downgrade” users sticking with older firmware, as the lawsuit claims.

The consequences of the suit could be significant (not least for Sony’s already weak financial position) – on the one hand consumers are rightly dubious of companies unilaterally withdrawing advertised functionality after product release, and on the other hand manufacturers providing online services on computer-like devices are likely to consider rules preventing them from removing functionality a potentially huge liability.

Japan has issued an arrest warrant for the leader of eco-terrorist group Sea Shepherd, Paul Watson, and is planning to have Interpol issue an international arrest warrant in pursuit of his extradition.

As the individual responsible for planning and ordering attacks on Japan’s “scientific” whaling operations, the Japanese Coast Guard has issued an arrest warrant for the group’s leader 59-year-old Canadian leader, consisting of a variety of charges including assault and interference with official duties.

They plan to issue an international arrest warrant through Interpol, which could lead to his extradition to Japan.

Meanwhile the captain of the Ady Gil, Peter Bethune, is already in police custody in Japan after boarding a whaling vessel and has been charged with 5 counts of assault.

Barring political interference, conviction seems likely and jail possible.

Bethune apparently admitted to police that he had planned the attacks with the group’s leader, giving police much of the evidence they needed to press charges. Video evidence of Watson being present at the scene of the crimes also exists.

Japanese police generally do not press charges until they are sure of a conviction, so whether Sea Shepherd’s leader ends up languishing in a Japanese jail may now only depend on how willing other countries are to honour any extradition request.

At the very least, as a wanted fugitive he may need to be very careful about his future travel arrangements

Argh! Damn it! Why do you guys act so high and mighty?! Look, you want a fight, you have one, and I won't pull any punches, you hear me?! Okay, anyway, here's the news for today. It's been long since I posted these......so I hope you all have a fun time!

A senior Square Enix employee is being reported as publically saying that Final Fantasy XI will terminate in 2010, to be replaced by Final Fantasy XIV.

The remark was apparently made by one of Square Enix’s top HR people at the “Square Enix Recruiting Seminar 2011,” and duly reported on a personal blog by an attendee:

I think some amongst you will know, but FF11 started in 2002 … Well, this year it’ll end and the stage will shift to FF14.

The witness suspects the remark was inadvertent, but it is adamant it was made. Oddly, first the article and then the entire site which reported the remark were taken down shortly after.

Square Enix has previously assured players that any shutdown of the game would be announced a year in advance, so just what is going on is not clear.

In any case, with the sequel nearing release and the original game increasingly showing its age, the day of any shutdown must be close at hand, and it seems pertinent that one of 2ch’s threads on the subject is entitled “How many people will commit suicide when FF11 ends?”

Final Fantasy XIII’s producer has expressed his interest in a Final Fantasy VII remake, and has explicitly denied there will be any DLC for Final Fantasy XIII.

Yoshinori Kitase, a Square Enix game producer and head of one of its development units, commented to the the effect that he had “a great interest” in an “HD” remake of Final Fantasy VII, saying that such a project would take the form of a “perfect” realisation.

Previously another top figure in Square Enix, Tetsuya Nomura, had scotched the notion of such a remake, so where this leaves the hypothetical project is not clear.

He (as producer of Final Fantasy XIII, together with director Motomu Toriyama) also carefully touches upon the criticism the game has attracted in Japan in a tame interview situation with Sony’s minions:

What do you say to those who say the game might be too linear? Does the accusation bother you?

The earlier part of the game was intentionally created to be a linear experience because we wanted to make the experience similar to a movie or drama where players really get to know the characters and what is behind their actions.

And also, since this is a brand new system for FFXIII, we wanted to take the correct steps to make sure players can control that system at will.

So it is a surprise that so many people are commenting that the game is linear, but once you get into the area of Pulse in the game , it’s much more of a free world and the battle system really comes to life.

And once you have a good idea of how to control it, you can go full force and it should be a completely different experience.

Do you think that the idea of RPGs from the 80s and 90s being wide open is a dated stereotype?

There’s sort of a template to the RPG system, traditionally, where players would go to the town and find out information through text, leave town to fight monsters and then come back to town and buy health and items, etc.

FFXIII didn’t really look for some sort of template to follow, but we tried to go out and create and set a new trend for RPGs. So there isn’t really a thought to stick to tradition.
Developer comments published in Japan tell a different story:

The game’s linearity was just because depicting towns and so on like we did before was impossible to do on an “HD” console – it was too much work
Presumably such comments are not suitable for release until after the game has had a chance to sell internationally for a while.

Finally, he categorically denies there being any DLC for the game:

I heard there was content removed from the original game? Could it possibly resurface as DLC?

Regarding the DLC content, we feel that the final product is 100% enjoyable… it’s the complete package.

So we’re not planning any DLC at this time.

In regard to the rumored cut content, we feel it was taken out of context. There are a lot of ideas that are brought to the table, and then the team takes the best ideas out of those, and the final product is polished that way.

The cartoonist whose satirical drawing of Mohammed caused him to be vilified by Muslims the world over has been the subject of an Islamically inspired assassination attempt; he escaped death, though his assailant was shot several times by police.

Kurt Westergaard’s depiction of Mohammed, published in a Danish newspaper in 2005, infuriated Muslims the world over, with many demanding that Denmark censor the cartoons.

Dozens were killed in violent protests against the “blasphemous” caricatures, and Danish embassies throughout the Islamic world were attacked.

The religion of peace soon inspired numerous fatwa against Westergaard, and a million dollar bounty was placed on his head.

Westergaard was driven into hiding but defiantly emerged years later, albeit under heavy police protection.

However, this proved useless as a 28-year-old Somali Islamist was able to break into his home with a knife, vowing to kill him.

Westergaard fled to a panic room with his infant granddaughter and summoned his police guardians, who apprehended the assassin; he resisted arrest and was shot in the knee and shoulder by police. His injuries are not said to be life-threatening.

Police previously arrested three Muslim immigrants for plotting to kill Westergaard, but this is the first time he has been bodily attacked.

Danish intelligence reports the assassin was known to be a member of a violent Islamist group thought to have ties to al-Qaeda, and was already under surveillance for his other activities; doubtless they will have some interesting questions to answer regarding how he was able to attempt his crime despite this.

A man has apparently narrowly avoided divorce after being accused of adultery by his wife, after she discovered his virtual relationships with three schoolgirls.

The story begins with the anonymous husband accidently leaving his camera bag (for he worked with cameras) at home one day. It so happened he hid his DS in this bag.

His dutiful wife was cleaning the house and noticed a light coming from the bag; thinking it to be a camera left on, she thought to tell her husband of his mistake, but instead discovered the light came from one of the girls of Love Plus, who require regular attention.

His wife stated that at this moment she “felt as if she had discovered the existence of an affair,” and is infuriated by the very memory of the “adulteresses” she found there.

Enraged, she confiscated the console and demanded a full explanation of the game, and the unfortunate husband had to describe the details of his various dates and after-school skinship with the girls of the title.

Later she would go so far as to convene her lady friends together to work out what to do. They played the game, and thought little of it until coming upon Nene, whom they judged a real threat to the couple’s marriage.

Soon they judged the husband guilty of adultery with the game, and took away his DS to sell, with the wife keeping the cash. He was subsequently force to promise to pay for a New Year’s vacation in order to make amends.

He states he is just glad she did not divorce him.

The wife’s friends were spurred into action by the threatening prospect of losing their breadwinners to 2D schoolgirls, and initiated searches, catching three husbands engaed in this “adultery.”

One, it is said, meekly admitted the charges and handed over the game.

Another lost the game and had his pocket money reduced by his wife.

The other man was actually caught red-handed “kissing” his girl, and had his ROM destroyed on the spot, and was banned from the bedroom to boot.

The unfortunate narrator parts by wishing all those secretly playing Love Plus the best of luck.

Even if it turned out to be fiction, as we have seen the scenario more than rings true…

Two 10-year-old boys have been arrested after gang-raping an 8-year-old girl in broad daylight at a local playground.

The boys, both 10 and said to be best friends, met the girl and her sister one morning at the playground near their local community centre in London.

They took the 8-year-old girl, a friend of theirs, off to a secluded spot and allegedly took turns raping her.

The girl did not sustain any injuries during the assault.

Once she was released, she fled home and told her parents, who promptly alerted police. The boys were arrested later that day.

The attack was also apparently witnessed by the girl’s 6-year-old sister.

After being charged the boys were released on bail back into the custody of their parents whilst investigations continue.

A local politician expressed his shock at the incident:

“I have never heard of two ten-year-olds being accused of raping an eight-year-old girl. It’s just totally shocking.

It’s like the James Bulger case, you can’t believe children of that age would be capable of something like that.”

A 112-year man has taken a 17-year-old girl as his wife in a supposedly consenting Islamic marriage.

The man, a resident of lawless and largely Islamic Somalia, is 112 years old, having had 5 wives (several of whom he has outlived) and 13 children, but apparently felt the need for one more.

His wife is a 17-year-old girl from the same village as him.

The man claims his new wife gave her consent:

“I didn’t force her, but used my experience to convince her of my love; and then we agreed to marry.”
His latest wife joins a rather extensive clan – the man reportedly has 114 children or grandchildren, some as old as 80. He expresses a desire for more from his new wife.

However, at 112 his interests in marrying her seem as much pragmatic as sexual:

“It is a blessing to have someone you love to take care of you.”
We do not hear what the bride thinks of all this.

Although many Islamic countries actively encourage or passively tolerate “marriages” of extremely young girls to much older men, it should be noted that such a marriage would be perfectly legal in a number of western countries, though of course the validity of her consent might still be wondered at in a nation where women enjoy next to no rights and female genital mutilation is routine…

And Wii's reputation is dropping.
Nintendo CEO Satoru Iwata has publicly admitted the Wii’s momentum has slowed and that a failure to deliver any decent games has soured the public to the console.

His statements were made after the company had to announce a 58% drop in net profits and a 43% drop in Wii sales…

Along with the nosediving sales, he frankly admitted the Wii was having difficulties:

“The Wii has lost momentum. We’ve been unable to keep introducing good software, and the favourable mood towards the console has cooled.”
In April he admitted that “the Wii’s position is perilous,” but it seems he has done nothing much in the mean time to rectify matters.

The recent Wii price cut, made in response to the PS3 Slim’s release, did have a positive effect on hardware sales, but this does not disguise the fact that the most notable Wii title of late is nothing but a remake of a 25-year-old Mario game – possibly Nintendo will have to do better than rehashed fitness games and remade “classics” if it wishes to compete with compelling line-ups from Microsoft and Sony…

Murderers:
Police have arrested a woman suspected of tricking an otaku into giving her some $50,000 to cover the couple’s imminent marriage, after which the man promptly committed suicide.

Further investigations revealed three other men connected with the woman had died under mysterious circumstances, in a case police are treating as murder.

The 41-year-old salaryman, a resident of Saitama with a noted interest in plamo (plastic models), had, he thought, finally realised his dreams of marriage, having met a woman 7 years his junior who appeared prepared to marry him.

He wrote in his blog about his hopes for the future and delight at having the opportunity of marriage, even posting a photograph of the sweets he bought in Akihabara to celebrate the occasion (shown above).

He described how he was about to go on a trip with his partner before their planned marriage, and meet her parents. Commenters congratulated him.

However, some twenty hours after this post his body was discovered in a rental car (shown), together with the charcoal briquettes often used by suicidal Japanese to induce carbon monoxide poisoning.

An autopsy report soon concluded this was no ordinary suicide, finding tranquilisers in his bloodstream.

Police suspected his body had in fact been placed so as to give the impression of suicide after finding he had never bought the briquettes or expressed any signs of depression, and noting that the car keys were missing from the scene despite the doors being locked.

He had also just given the woman ¥5,000,000 to cover marriage expenses.

Police quickly caught up with the woman he had been dating, identified only as a 34-year-old resident of Tokyo’s Toshima ward, and arrested her.

She explained how she had dumped him after a quarrel and “perhaps he committed suicide in the carpark after the shock?”

Oddly, the deceased otaku has been identified by 2ch’s diligent investigators as being behind a 2008 Yahoo! Answers post in which he is apparently asking about the wisdom of marrying a Chinese woman met via Yahoo!’s dating service.

He apparently took the proffered advice to avoid her in case of foul play, but some are suspicious about the mass media’s unusual refusal to publish the name or face of the accused…

Police soon realised this was perhaps but the tip of the iceberg, with no less than three other men known to the woman having died under mysterious circumstances, including an 80-year-old man who died in a house fire, with unexplained cashcard withdrawals made on the day of his death.

X-Box 360 stuff-
A comparison of the post-price cut Japanese sales figures for the major consoles reveals that PS3 sales have rocketed 707% compared to the same period a year earlier, whilst Xbox 360 sales have actually decreased 70%, in spite of price cuts.

The figures, based on Enterbrain data:

PS3: 707%

PSP: 126%

Wii: 29%

360: -70%
All these consoles have had their prices slashed recently, with effects ranging from extreme in the case of the PS3, to completely ineffectual in the case of the Xbox 360, which now appears to be in an irrecoverable position in Japan.

Of course, nobody expects this boost for the PS3 to be permanent, although the release of Final Fantasy XIII is just around the corner…

Masamune Shirow’s legendary cyberpunk franchise Ghost in the Shell has had its Hollywood adaptation in the works for some time now, with the latest news being that Dreamworks has assigned Laeta Kalogridis as lead writer.

Seasoned writer Kalogridis is taking over from Jamie Moss, who was originally set to adapt the popular Japanese franchise to a more western market.

She has written scripts for a number of Hollywood films, and is also involved with the Hollywood adaptation of Battle Angel Alita, apparently with few disasters to her credit (although she did help write a Tomb Raider movie).

Also involved in this project are Avi Arad, Ari Arad and Steven Paul of Seaside Entertainment. Avi Arad, formerly of Marvel, has been involved with many of Marvel’s TV and movie adaptations, including such titles as Spider Man and The Hulk.

Dreamworks has planned this adaptation as a “Live Action 3D”, presumably implying a heavy CG component, just as with the anime and even manga versions.

Fans will undoubtedly be watching with bated breath to see how Hollywood handles this major franchise and whether another embarrassingly successful rape ensues.

With such titles as Ghost in the Shell and Battle Angel Alita in the works (and less promisingly, Akira), it seems Hollywood may now be doing more to further the fortunes of anime as an art form than the industry itself, which appears lately to have devolved into obsessively cannibalising an increasingly sterile set of schoolgirl themed titles for the sake of a narrow niche market… Even Hollywood has a long way to sink before it reaches the depths of the moe boom.

The glittering Japanese release of Windows 7 has been set awry by the pathetic failure of the operating system’s touchscreen capability on prime morning television:

Although this is Microsoft’s best operating system since Windows XP, many could be forgiven for thinking this is setting the bar a little low.

Between moe Nanami Madobe and a 7 patty Burger King hamburger gigant (the “Windows 7 Whopper”), there is a notable lack of emphasis on the shiny new features of Windows 7 in the launch campaign.

Most interesting of all is how Microsoft have cunningly hijacked the “OS-tan” meme, which traditionally alludes somehow to the shortcomings of the operating system, for example Vista-tan’s enormous memory requirements being reflected in the size of her bosom.

Nanami appears on the other hand to be absolutely perfect, and has supplanted a fan-created OS-tan which might be embarrassing to Microsoft, although surely pictures of her impassively being groped are not far off…

The Japanese release of Windows 7 has seen OS-tan fans go wild over the highly appealing official Windows 7 mascot Nanami Madobe, who appears in the high resolution and high quality wallpapers included here.

The rest of the theme, including a colour scheme and voicing by top seiyuu Nana Mizuki, was quickly leaked online and is currently enjoying great popularity in what some might suspect was all a well designed piece of viral marketing from the start…

A teacher claims he “had no ill intent” after he brazenly fondled the breasts of one of his young female pupils; he faces disciplinary action.

The 58-year-old Tochigi prefecture teacher inserted a hand underneath the girl’s top and began touching her breast through her underwear during an afternoon class, whilst other students were present.

He explains his groping: “There’s no way I had any ill intent, but I touched her.”

Parents demanded educational authorities not identify whether the school in question was an elementary or middle school, so consequently details of the girl’s age are not known.

The incident was uncovered after parents confronted the school about it, and an investigation soon confirmed the complaints.

The teacher subsequently apologised to parents in a gesture unlikely to reassure many… He is now taking a voluntary hiatus from teaching.

Just what action the school will take is not clear, though promotion seems unlikely.

Presumably his notion of what constitutes “ill intent” does not take into account what anyone else might think of it…

Two twins who downloaded a variety of shotacon materials have been jailed for possessing “virtual child pornography,” with the judge condemning them for “victimising” imaginary children.

The men, both 20 and residents of the Canadian province of Nova Scotia, were reported to police by a sister-in-law after she came accross “distressing” images on their computer.

Police searches soon found a substantial collection of shotacon material on their computers, saying 90% were “cartoon drawings called Japanese Anime.”

The pair, one of whom is said to be an active homosexual, were subsequently charged with possession of child pornography, both for the minority of real images and their manga collection, which under Canadian law is considered “virtual child pornography.”

The state prosecutor insists that victimising fictional children is a very serious offence:

“Every one of these images involves the victimization of children. The victimization wouldn’t happen in the first place if there weren’t people there to look at this material.”
The judge was equally scathing, saying the drawings “victimize” children:

“This is a crime that victimizes young people around the world. It creates a market which then re-victimizes the most vulnerable in society.

The images can only be regarded as disgusting and perverse.”
The judge handed down a three month prison sentence for each of the twins, ordering they be registered as sex offenders, provide DNA samples and refrain from contact with children, presumably including imaginary ones as well. A sex offenders’ treatment programme will attempt to cure them of their deviant lusts.

In a final twist to the case, the court accepted arguments that the pair, having been branded pederasts for the rest of their lives, would likely be in danger if housed amongst the general prison population. As a result they get to serve their sentence only on weekends, and in protective custody.

Although drawn imagery depicting underage sexual activity is constitutionally protected free speech in the USA, and has been upheld as such despite a variety of efforts to ban it, Canada possesses no such checks to the power of legislators, and consequently draconian laws against “virtual child pornography” are freely enforced.

Noted visual novel publisher Navel is blocking non-Japanese visitors to their site, serving them a cheery 403 instead, but at the same time is publishing its games in English.

A slew of clueless eroge publishers began blocking non-Japanese visitors to their sites in an attempt to appease the pro-censorship lobby at home and overseas, despite most of the fuss coming from religious and feminist groups within Japan.

Navel, best known for Shuffle!, is apparently amongst these “eroge sakoku” publishers, having replaced its (currently obnoxiously noisy, if tastefully orange) homepage with a simple 403 if the user’s IP address is non-Japanese.

Of course, the filtering can be bypassed with a simple proxy.

However, unlike the bulk of eroge publishers whose games are never released outside Japan, Navel is currently publishing its entire Shuffle! series in English, and fully uncensored, as released by MangaGamer.

Few could help but be astonished at the attitude of a company which bans overseas visitors from its pages with no explanation whilst simultaneously expecting them to buy its products in translation.

This also demolishes the notion that Japanese publishers are somehow protecting overseas visitors from content they can’t handle – Navel are releasing in English the very same titles they are saying overseas visitors are unfit to learn about on their own site.

Three Kingdoms ero-anime Shin Koihime Musou is well underway, but its third episode has attracted particular attention for a scene in which some of the cast are tasked with catching eels with their breasts…

Expect the DVD version to dispose of the inconvenient flashes of light and intervening objects, which are utilized as...uh....censors....yes, they are that cheap.

Japanese car manufacturers are becoming increasingly distressed at the lack of interest in their cars displayed by young Japanese, and Toyota has made what many consider the risible suggestion that this is due to the pernicious influence of video games…

Toyota’s management is quoted grumbling about their collapsing Japanese sales:

“Video game consoles are the problem. With such realistic play available they don’t need cars or anything anymore.”
The mass media has previously tied this “kurumabanare” to changing tastes (including the supposed “herbivorousness” of young males when confronted with what the car industry has always insisted is the very manly prospect of car ownership) and Japan’s ongoing demographic collapse.

More sensible reasons typically given for the disconnect between the youth of Japan and the nation’s car culture include a reduction in their incomes, a lack of access to credit, the extremely high cost of car ownership in Japan, and of course the ubiquity of trains in the nation’s metropolitan areas.

Market surveys have concluded that economic factors are the most significant, along with urban life and a “diversification” of interests amongst the younger generations.

Sony’s new PSP Go, an Internet based PSP designed to cut out traditional retailers, has experienced dire sales in several territories, selling only 1,000 units in its first week of sales in Australia, even whilst rumours of a PSP2 in 2010 are starting to circulate.

Of 50,000 units made available in France, retailers only managed to sell 8,000. However, this was successful compared to its Australian performance – the console sold only 1,000 units in the entire first week of its release, with major retailers refusing to even stock the hated product.

In other news, Sony’s next handheld release, a heavily upgraded PSP2 with graphics capabilities “on par with desktop PCs,” is supposedly due for release in 2010… The report is far from confirmed (and seems hard to believe coming so close on the heels of the PSP Go itself), but if true it would completely doom the PSP Go to novelty hardware status.

The expected huge lead in PS3 sales in the USA has materialised, and it is no wonder Microsoft put a brave face on things – the PS3 even managed to unseat the Wii, and is currently the best selling home console in the much coveted US market.

The US sales for September:

2. PlayStation 3 – 491,800

3. Wii – 462,800

4. Xbox 360 – 352,600

5. PlayStation Portable – 190,400

By comparison, the US sales for August, showing just how effective the PS3 Slim induced price cuts have been in spurring sales for all the home consoles:

Deus Machina Demonbane, the first of the much anticipated Nitroplus English eroge releases, is nearing release, with more details and pre-orders now available.

The game itself, Nitroplus’s fifth release and dating from 2003, is billed as a heroic saga featuring mecha and transforming heroes amidst a Cthulhu mythos inspired setting, with art by noted illustrator Niθ. Naturally, it includes plenty of erotic elements as well.

The game soon spawned a full mixed media franchise, with family friendly PS2 and PC releases and an anime, novels and manga, along with the usual slew of figures and other merchandise.

Bayonetta Scores 100%, PS3 Inferior to X-Box 360
Bayonetta has been awarded full marks (40/40) by top gaming rag Famitsu, but only for the Xbox 360 original. Even Famitsu feels obliged to point out the bungled nature of Sega’s PS3 port, giving it a piffling 38/40.

The reviewers point out how “unfortunate” it is that the PS3 version enjoys noticeably less gorgeous visuals than the Xbox 360 version.

Good as it may be, many are doubting whether an exagerrated 100% score is really appropriate.

Pointedly, whilst overseas games media heaped praise upon recently released PS3 flagship title Uncharted 2 as being a paragon of gaming virtue, Famitsu only saw fit to award it 37 points, less than the defective port of Bayonetta, for a title many acclaim as a gaming milestone.

The significant difference of course being that Uncharted 2’s Japanese release was very low key as the title is not expected to sell well in the Japanese market, whereas Platinum has expended a considerable amount on advertising Bayonetta with Famitsu and others…

Analysis of the stockpiles of nuclear material available for use in bomb building reveals some surprising results, with Japan’s nuclear potential ranking high in an international comparison thanks to its large nuclear power industry.
As the chart suggests, it takes into account estimates of plutonium stockpiles, whether acquired expressly for the purposes of nuclear armament or for civilian power generation, to build a series of estimates of the potential nuclear stockpiles each nation could build.

New data suggests 70% of unmarried Japaneses men in their twenties and thirties have no girlfriend, with an alarming jump of 20% in just three years for men in their twenties.

She turned herself in to a mental hospital and attempted to avoid prosecution by having herself declared insane, but police would have none of it and criminal charges of murder and manslaughter followed.

The defence argued that she had no choice but to cut off her father’s penis as she feared he would haul her nieces off to his homeland of Liberia, where she alleges she was abused by him from an early age.

After two years elapsed the courts finally found her guilty, but only of manslaughter. She faces a prison sentence of from 5 to 15 years.

The defense lawyer was chuffed with the verdict:

“We got a great verdict, the horrors she lived through no one should ever have to go through.”
The prosecution was less pleased:

“Her actions warrant serious prison time, during which time she hopefully will receive the counseling she so obviously needs.”

A bear which viciously mauled 9 people in an unprovoked attack on mountainside resort has itself been gunned down.

The beast invaded a mountainside lodge in the backwater prefecture of Tochigi packed with dozens of tourists; encountering several tourists near the lodge, it began attacking and chasing them, throwing one to the ground and maiming a man who came to his aid horribly with bites to his face.

The only defence visitors and staff could muster was throwing rocks and making loud noises at the bear, which only served to utterly enrage it.

Soon the alarm was raised and patrons fled into the lodge and attempted to lock it out, but the bear chased after them and slipped in before they could shut it out; it then began attacking them in the building, raking them with claw and fang, and causing a hysterical stampede out of the building.

Eventually the facility was evacuated completely, patrons by bus and wounded by helicopter; 9 people received injuries in connection with the incident, the worst having their faces badly bitten or their bodies terribly clawed.

Hunters shot the bear, still loitering about the lodge, some three hours after its rampage began; it was a male Asian Black Bear of but 90kg.

Bear encounters are said to be growing in Japan’s increasingly depopulated rural areas, with a lack of stewardship or access to firearms doing little to reassure visitors to the wilder areas. People encountering rampaging bears are advised to try scaring them off with a small bell.

A meeting of UK plastic surgeons was told that over the past 5 years breast reduction surgery for men has increased 1000%, with the operation now the fifth most popular cosmetic surgery for men.

Plastic surgeons are delighted by all the new business:

“We are seeing men of all ages coming in to have their breasts made smaller. They are losing their inhibitions about the operation and deciding to undergo an operation which previously was a women’s operation.”
In 2008 alone a thousand men underwent the procedure, which costs in the region of $1,700.

The newly released preview for the upcoming Halo Legends anime (below) has impressed many, but some can’t help but notice some curious discrepancies between the anime and the game, such as the complete absence of ranged combat in favour of lots of jumping around and punching…watch the vid in youtube: Halo Legends - The Babysitter(preview) (Spike tv)

The studios involved have previously attracted attention with the liberties taken, and with this latest trailer it certainly appears they are in no mood to be constrained by the setting of the original game, though whether this is to the advantage or detriment of the anime remains to be seen.

Ninja GAiden (renamed to Oppai Gaiden due to it's.....ah...revelations)
A graphical comparison of the new PS3 version of Tecmo’s breast physics engine Ninja Gaiden Sigma 2 to the Xbox 360 original reveals the PS3 version to be spectacularly superior to the Xbox 360 version, just as some had suspected.
Whether this is a case of Tecmo not bothering with the Xbox 360 version, or, as many will doubtless like to claim, the PS3’s capabilities being superior to those of the Xbox 360, is an interesting question.

It might be wondered why they do not highlight this rather spectacular difference in their marketing efforts…

Another school has been thrown into chaos with the surprise announcement that a 9-year-old boy will henceforth be a girl.

Under circumstances all but identical to a previous case involving a 12-year-old boy, a 9-year-old boy at a UK primary school suddenly returned to school at the start of the new term as a “girl,” in the vain hopes that nobody would notice.

The school, together with the boy’s parents, decided to sidestep any tricky explanations and simply lie to children and tell them the boy had been replaced by a similar girl, which unsurprisingly did not fool the children at all.

“Doctors” and the boy’s parents apparently decided that his wishes to become a girl should be indulged. A source at the school reports that “the boy had always been rather feminine.”

A “gender counselor,” whose trade revolves around promoting sex-changes, is unsurprisingly supportive:

“People should not be surprised that a child so young has these feelings. What is more of a surprise is that the child has been able to express them openly, and that because of changes in society those around the child have been so supportive.”
However, an actual organisation of transvestites and transsexuals doubts the wisdom of this:

PS3 game : Tales of Vesperia:

Responding to the complaints of Xbox 360 Tales of Vesperia beta testers, a developer has laid bare the not so shocking truth of just how Namco was paid off by Microsoft to secure an “exclusive” release, but instead merely used the Xbox subsidy to reduce development costs on the PS3 version, which it expected to sell better.

However, Sony intervened and blackmailed them into adding massive amounts of new content if they wanted to be allowed to go ahead with the PS3 release at all…

He goes into considerable detail on his blog:

“First off, it was easier developing for the Xbox 360. This is to do with the games I was involved with, but basically if you sign an exclusive contract with Microsoft (you won’t release it on other hardware for a year or similar), they will give you a lot of cash for development.

Their support is also very fast and complete in these cases.

SCE don’t really give much cash out (any at all perhaps). Their support is confused and unreliable. When I was doing it at least, the 360 was easier to develop for, which lowers costs.

As a result, first you develop for the Xbox, reducing development costs. But the Xbox version won’t sell [in Japan], you can’t recoup even those lowered costs at all.

So they ported to the PS3, it’s cheaper as you already have the game done, but then Sony came back and told them ‘We won’t recognise it if it’s the same as the Xbox 360 version. Make sure you put in a lot of extra stuff!’

If we didn’t then they wouldn’t have let us pass their check…”
He claims that the developers all wished to produce the best possible game with this opportunity, and had no intention of deliberately putting out an incomplete game; they were instead keen to produce a version that “even Xbox 360 players could enjoy again.”

He also claims traces of later additions found in the Xbox code merely fell victim to pressures of scheduling…

He goes on to pour cold water on the notion of a DLC Xbox 360 version, saying that it could take another year to convert all the development resources back onto the Xbox, making it impossible in practical terms.

This news seems to suggest that Microsoft has been cunningly funding the development of PS3 games by allowing developers to develop cheaply on its platform, accompanied by a huge grant paid for each “exclusive” release, with the developers then cheaply porting onto the PS3, with additional features as required…

Random game:
The pool of Japanese Xbox 360 “exclusives” appears to be shrinking fast with the news that ero-RPG Star Ocean 4 is to come to the PS3, its exclusive status having apparently worn off in much the same way as with the imminent Tales of Vesperia.

The news comes by way of a leaked release schedule indicating that “Star Ocean 4 The Last Hope International” will be due in Japan on February 2010.
Confirmed features so far are voices switchable between English and Japanese, and what look to be minor cosmetic changes and gameplay tweaks.

The language options presumably mean a dual language English version will also be released, and the game has indeed appeared briefly in the release schedules of some US retailers.

With Square Enix having betrayed the Xbox 360 so flagrantly, we can but wonder what awaits in a PS3 version, and whether the Xbox 360 release will turn out to be but a beta version as in the now notorious Tales of Vesperia fiasco.

Assuming of course that it escapes the wrath of a Sony check...

A teacher who raped and indecently assaulted as many as 27 of his pupils a total of 95 times has received a 30 year sentence.

The 43-year-old man formerly taught at a Hiroshima elementary school, and from 1989, the year after he started teaching, his true calling of hentai teacher began.

Over this 19 year career he was found to have violated 27 schoolgirls, aged 9 to 12, at least 95 times, blackmailing and violently coercing them into indecent acts with him. He faced charges relating to ten of those victims.

The prosecution demanded he receive the maximum possible punishment of 30 years, saying “He abused his position as teacher to fullest possible extent in order to satisfy his warped lusts; only the greatest possible sentence is appropriate.”

His defence begged the court’s mercy with the rather improbable “His chance of reoffending is slim!”

The judge would have none of it, passing down the full 30 year sentence:

“By telling these girls that if they did not accede to your demands you would not teach them, you exploited their immature minds, repeatedly and brutally defiling the sacred ground of an educational establishment.

The cruel damage you wrought is excessive, the social harm inflicted grave. Considering the circumstances and motive there is no reason to spare you.

As you bear the gravest of responsibility for disrupting the lives of these young girls, I can only pass the maximum sentence allowable.”

A recent movie celebrating the 200th anniversary of Charles Darwin’s birth has ignited a storm of criticism in the superstitiously minded US, with creationists denouncing the movie, reversing the balance of opinion seen in other developed countries.

Mothers:
A mother who stalked and seduced the biological son she gave up for adoption some ten years ago has been charged with rape.
The 35-year-old Detroit woman, pictured, tracked down her teenage son (age withheld) using the Internet, after giving him up for adoption and not seeing him for 10 years.

China’s top state run broadcaster is being accused of plagiarising elements of Pokémon and Naruto in its latest children’s anime, not long after it was discovered to have shamelessly copied 5cm Per Second wholesale; the broadcaster obstinately denies the charges, saying there is a difference between “plagiarism” and “imitation.”
Chinese Central Television (or CCTV), under the direct control of the Chinese Communist Party’s Central Propaganda Department, recently began airing 恐龙宝贝之龙神勇士, loosely “Dinosaur Baby Holy Heroes,” but Chinese anime fans soon spotted the fact that the anime was copying character designs, story and music from a variety of Japanese anime, most notably Pokémon, Digimon and Naruto.

The director of CCTV’s Children’s Channel was soon confronted over the issue, but he angrily denied all wrong-doing, saying it was a matter for the studio responsible, and then asking those doubting the work to “consider the difference between imitation and plagiarism.”

With the government having banned non-Chinese anime from TV due to fear of foreign influences and to foster homegrown anime, domestic producers have struggled to satisfy demand, generally producing anime of very low quality, loathed by many Chinese for its highly propagandistic nature.

This difficult position, coupled with the lack of respect for copyright the mainland is notorious for, seems to have led many studios to simply plagiarise Japanese anime, frequently passing it off as “100% domestic,” and often doing so in direct collusion with the state.

Chinese visitors to a notorious village street in Hubei province were recently met with a shocking scene.

With no municipal waste disposal service whatsoever, and no initiative on the part of residents, the garbage is simply dumped on the side of the street, abutting a river (itself already polluted).

However, dense clouds of flies soon form, so someone sets fire to the refuse to drive them off.

This causes the rubbish to burn slowly for days, spreading a disgusting miasma of smoke from burning filth and plastic throughout the area, which happens to be used by children on their way to school and students on their way to university.

After the rubbish is burnt off, fresh rubbish is dumped on top and the cycle repeats.

This “waste management” approach has apparently been used for many years, with no end in sight.

Suing Bibles:
A homosexual is demanding $70,000,000 in damages from Bible publishers for printing a book which dares to condemn homosexuality as a sin.

The man, unsurprisingly an American, claims two Bible publishers “manipulated” their translations from an ambiguous condemnation of “abusers of themselves with mankind” to an explicit condemnation of “homosexuals.”

The King James Version of the bible, to many English-speaking Christians “The Bible,” exerted considerable influence over the English language as a literary masterpiece. However, its admonitions are frequently ambiguous, and its translation politically motivated or disputed.

For example, the King James Version renders a condemnation of sexual deviancy in 1 Corinthians 6:9-10 obliquely as:

The man claims that the publishers of such Bibles caused him “demoralization, chaos and bewilderment,” by deliberately publishing “homophobic” versions of the Bible, entitling him to huge damages.

One publisher has denounced his claims as “ridiculous,” pointing out that they neither translated nor own the rights to the version they publish.

Most major religious texts take a dim view of homosexuality, so it seems he may have a very long string of lawsuits ahead of him.

Rubber Duckies:
A 10m tall rubber duck has been sighted on the waterways of Osaka.

The prosaically named Suito Osaka Rubber Duck Project, designed by Dutch artist Florentijn Hofman, has seen a 9.5m tall by 11m long rubber duck statue floated on the city’s waterways, for no particular reason. The duck has previously menaced other cities, but this is its first appearance in Japan.

Internet Slaves:
Nine women held captive for two months after being tricked into thinking they were in a reality TV show have been rescued; their captors sold scantily clad images of their prisoners online even as the public voted on which they preferred.

The group of 9 women, the youngest being only 15, were recruited to attend what they thought would be the filming of a “Big Brother” style reality TV series, set in an Istanbul villa.

However, the women quickly realised all was not as it seemed, and asked to leave; they were refused, and a period of incarceration lasting two months ensued.

During this time pictures of the women exercising and in bathing suits were sold online, with votes held on which were most sexy.

Turkish authorities eventually got wind of the scheme and military police launched a full scale raid on the villa, freeing all of the girls.

A “female” gold-medallist athlete is in danger of being stripped of her medals after tests revealed she is a hermaphrodite.

The 18-year-old South African runner, Caster Semenya, became a victim of her own success when a spectacular 800m win in the recent World Athletics Championships caused race authorities to order tests on her.

She is said to have biological characteristics of both genders, with female genitalia but no ovaries and internal testes.

However, legally she is quite female, and still passes hormonal tests as a female.

An official with the body ordering the tests explained the complexity of the situation:

Anime:
All the newly created episodes of the current broadcast of Haruhi have been exhausted with the latest episode, leaving only further repeats.

Newtype has already published official schedules indicating the remaining four episodes are repeats from the original series, so unless the final episode is modified in some way (or replaced entirely), a prospect which Haruhi-ists will doubtless cling to until the bitter end, the “Disappearance” arc initially promised for the new series has entirely disappeared.

There is some speculation that continuations may come by way of a new PSP game or the entirely hypothetical Haruhi movie, but otherwise it seems the franchise will be dead for another three years, if indeed it ever revives…

game Consoles:
A chance observation by 2ch has led to the surprising discovery that some Japanese movie theatres are actually playing their films from PS3s.

The tale begins with a 2ch denizen’s visit to a Sendai cinema, where the audience’s viewing of Kara no Kyoukai was rudely interrupted by the appearance of an onscreen warning to recharge their controller.

Opinion was quickly split as to whether this was a fine advertisement of the PS3’s capabilities or a rather miserly move on the part of the cinema.

Soon the news spread through 2ch-watching blogs and was picked up by a site which apparently managed to confirm by way of Aniplex that the showing was indeed using a PS3, though not using Blu-ray as some had thought.

It transpires that full HD at 1920×1080 was being stored on the PS3 HDD, with the quality apparently indistinguishable from more typical projector-source hardware.

A number of cinemas are apparently using this method, though it might be hoped they are rather more careful about keeping their controllers charged

Women:
New survey results compound previous findings with the news that 46% of Japanese women admit to cheating on their partners.

The survey, conducted by StyleWalker, asked 2,000 Japanese women in their teens and twenties “Have you ever cheated on someone?”

23% confessed to some prior acts of infidelity, giving the usual creative excuses or remorseful vows never to do it again until the next time.

A further 9% admit to “unintentionally” cheating, giving such highly convincing excuses as “I was dating someone, but he confessed to me and I couldn’t refuse…” and “I fell for someone else even though I was dating him.”

4% actually acknowledged they were currently cheating on their man, some even with more than one person…

However, 54% of women asked would not admit to cheating on their partners, though whether this implies innocence or discretion is certainly open to question.

These results seem extraordinarily similar to another, previous survey; that put the proportion of cheating women at a close 45% of the total, suggesting the results may be quite reliable.

Hatsune Miku...oh sorry, Hachune(????) Miku:
Hachune Miku, the chibi version of virtual idol Hatsune Miku, will be launched high into the heavens in a rocket this month.

The rocket, along with the Miku figurine, is taking part in the eXtreme Performance Rocket Ships (XPRS) contest, held by NASA in the Black Rock Desert of Nevada from September 18th to the 21st.

The project is being handled by Social Media Satellite Development Project (SOMESAT, formerly HAXA), the members all having met on NicoNico Douga, itself famous for popularising Hatsune Miku.

Somesat’s eventual aim is to launch Hachune Miku into space, though this launch will see them aim for a lesser altitude of some 2km.

The figure will showcase some technological advancement, which includes an electronic mechanism that is used to “wave” its signature “negi”.

Sales Disaster:
When confronted about its mockery of the remaining Haruhi fanbase with the four disc Endless Eight DVD release, even Kadokawa itself can only say “it would be nice if they sell.”

Their animation department responds to enquiries thus:

“Even in the company hardly anyone knows why it took eight repeated episodes spread across 4 DVDs with two episodes each in order to unravel the mystery thoroughly. We are aware of the fan reaction, but…”
When asked directly about whether they think these tactics will result in sales at the level of the first season, even Kadokawa is less than enthusiastic:

“Well… All that can be said is that it would be nice if they sell, wouldn’t it?”

Weird sculpter:
The same enigmatic chainsaw carver who previously sculpted Nagi-sama and Hatsune Miku from blocks of wood has turned his hand to creating a wooden idol of Mio, with quite spectacular results.

Now i'm torn between my romance/action novel(la?) and my current fantasy one which features almost all of our outstanding people in our class, namely Marin, Jen Yang, Keith, Wayne, MK and yours truly. It also includes our beloved people (reasons are stated behind their names, Haffidz (a truly great group member), Low Yu (for his attempts, and failures, to try and increase his randomness level to fit my expectations), Naunidh (for.....well....his turban?), Zheng Jie (for his amazing like-ness to Mr. Tay) and Hong Sheng (for being named HL Milk in the beginning of the year. Just kidding. For being a total dartboard for my insults).

however.....Megurine remains a mystery to why she is named so.
By the way, Rin's the girl, even though Right sounds very male-ish. And Len's the guy, even though Left sounds like a female-ish name.

Sony’s last hope for revitalising its flagging videogame business this generation is apparently a huge success, with a host of Japanese retailers selling out of the PS3 Slim completely before the general release has even begun…

A quick tour of big name Japanese game and electronics retailers reveals inventory has all but dried up; confirmed as being completely sold out are Amazon, Yamada Denki, Sofmap, ubook, eDeji and Rakuten, with Bic, Yodobashi, Geo and Joshin having sold out of the Gundam bundle but not (yet?) the bare console.

Of course, no one would put it past Sony to deliberately restrict supply to stores in order to create “sold out!” headlines and create an air of rarity and desirability, as some might suspect Nintendo of doing with its hugely successful Wii when that was first released…

A lolicon who carried off a 6-year-old girl into a store toilet in order to have his way with her was subsequently found to have stolen 100 sukumizu.

The 22-year-old car mechanic, a resident of Miyagi prefecture, was arrested after he seized a six-year-old girl in a convenience store and took her into the store toilet, gagging her to keep her quiet.

Once in the toilet apparently all he proceeded to do was pick her up and hold her; police charged him with assault after his apprehension.

Once caught, a search of his home revealed over 100 sets of school issue swimwear, all stolen from local elementary schools.

A survey has revealed unexpectedly high levels of interest in cosplay among Japanese women, with some 30% having either tried it or wanting to try it.

The online survey was conducted by market research firm iShare, and asked 565 Japanese men and women aged 20-40 about their attitudes to cosplay.

When both genders were asked whether they had an interest in cosplay, 9.9% answered they would like to try, 8.3% had actually tried it, and 28.5% were interested in watching it but not cosplaying themselves, making for a total of 46.7% with an interest.

However, amongst women the numbers were higher, with 13.6% interested in trying, and 14.7% actually having tried it. Younger women were even more interested, with 15.8% wanting to try amongst those in their twenties.

17.5% of those interested listed anime and manga as the theme of cosplay they would most like to undertake, after which came kigurumi (almost certainly referring to cartoon character suits) with 14.7%, maid and waitress uniforms (12.4%) and military uniforms (also 12.4%).

Top anime subjects for cosplay were Haruhi, Fullmetal Alchemist, as well as visual-kei bands like L’Arc en Ciel.

Although many Japanese women are quick to condemn men for having an interest in anime-related cosplay, it seems many are interested in trying themselves…

The Democratic Party of Japan, Japan’s leftist opposition party, seems intent on continuing its long history as an opposition party, having announced that it will “solve” Japan’s impending economic collapse under the weight of an unrealistically generous pension system by raising income taxes for all Japanese by a staggering 15%.

The plan, part of their election manifesto, would see a uniform 15% increase in income taxes (disguised as a pension plan) across all of Japan’s already hard pressed workers, irrespective of earnings; the cash would apparently be earmarked for squandering by Japan’s rapidly growing elderly population.

The policies favoured by the ruling coalition are more concerned to avoid any further strangulation of Japan’s fragile economy with excessive taxation, and center on reductions in the amount of pensions payable, though there is some doubt they have the capability to undertake serious reform.

It seems no matter what incompetence the LDP is capable of mustering, the opposition parties are capable of worse, a pattern which seems set to ensure the LDP’s almost uninterrupted 50 year reign is to continue…

A doctor has been arrested and subjected to a disciplinary hearing after it was revealed he manipulated the prescription of a female patient in order to addict her to the drugs and force her to become his sexual plaything, reducing the dosage should she resist him. He also had sex with another patient and an employee.

The doctor, a general practitioner at a practice in the city of Hull in northern England, began treating a married lady known only as “Patient B” for her depression, a hearing at the body regulating the nation’s doctors heard.

His treatment of her soon took an unconventional direction:

”She quite candidly admits that she was addicted to the medication she was prescribed and felt that [the doctor concerned] had complete control and said, on more than one occasion, that if she didn’t come into the surgery to see him and didn’t engage in sexual activity with him that he would either stop her drugs altogether or lower the dosage.”
Patient B apparently had sex with the doctor on numerous occasion, both at her home and his surgery.

His womanising antics did not stop there; he was also found to had an affair with “Patient A,” a grandmother (presumably a young one) with four daughters who reported having sex with the doctor at the surgery whilst her husband waited outside to be a “great buzz.”

The doctor even paid a visit to her in hospital whilst his own wife was recovering from surgery in the same hospital.

His regular home visits soon exposed his antics with this lady.

He also had an affair with an employee at the practice, carried off without incident it seems.

Both patients would make accusations, causing the doctor to be arrested for suspected rape and sexual assault, but police in the end brought no charges.

The General Medical Council would have none of his antics however, and launched its own disciplinary proceedings against him.

The doctor denies any wrongdoing.

Virtual idol Hatsune Miku has given her first live performance, being rapturously received by an audience of 25,000.

The performance was held at major anime music event Animelo Summer Live.
The preview for Black Rock Shooter’s upcoming anime adaptation was also shown…
Songs included classics MikuMiku ni Shite Ageru and Black Rock Shooter.
Added to her chart-topping albums and singles, this certainly makes Miku a formidable force.

2ch is generally scathing of such a performance by a virtual personage, but clearly those in attendance were delighted.

The distinction between real and virtual idols hardly seems tenable when we consider the almost complete fabrication which goes into creating a traditional 3D idol, with painstaking application of advertising, image management, dubbing, makeup, plastic surgery, and Photoshop enhancement all ensuring the end result bears very little resemblance to the “real” person.

Possibly this is set to become merely a question of visual style…

Microsoft has responded to the findings that the Xbox 360 has a 54% failure rate with in a way which raises more questions than it answers…

An MS PR flack glosses over the failure rate, only saying that they have a good warranty and are trying to improve the design:

“Microsoft stands behind the Xbox 360 as a superior entertainment console with one of the best warranties in the industry. We are constantly improving the design, manufacture and performance of the console through extensive testing of potential sources of any problems.

Xbox 360 is pleased to maintain the title of ‘most played console’ and the vast majority of Xbox 360 customers have enjoyed a terrific gaming and entertainment experience since their first day, and continue to, day in and day out.”
Curiously, they don’t dispute the 54% failure rate itself…

A 13-year-old schoolboy has attempted suicide after being caught lifting the skirt of a schoolgirl.

The boy, a middle-schooler in Kyoto, apparently lifted the up the skirt of a high schooler, and was subsequently disciplined by being subjected to “lifestyle guidance” in the school’s counselling room.

This apparently proved too much, for the moment the teacher left the room, he ran out of the room and threw himself down a third floor stairwell.

Surprisingly, he survived, though critically injured with a fractured skull and other injuries.

Shocked passengers on a New York subway train were treated to a striptease and pole dance in the middle of the carriage.
The exhibitionism is carefully packaged as “performance art,” and since the stripper (or “actress”) is an attractive female nobody really minds.

Orchestrator Zach Haiman (visible getting his money shots of the stripper in these shots) observes that “Photographing females in public is easier than males; people see a naked woman and they smile,” rather than run screaming in the case of a male.

A man has been arrested for a series of attacks in which he forced himself into the mouths of a number of female victims, explaining that they were substitutes for the girl he was going to marry.

The 37-year-old man, a student resident in Tokyo, was arrested on charges of assault after he shoved his fingers into the mouth of a 16-year-old schoolgirl on a train.

Police explain the details of the case:

The incident took place late one morning at Shinkiba station, in a stationary train. A man sat next to a 16-year-old schoolgirl suddenly plunged his fingers into her mouth; he didn’t get far, but he injured her lips a little.

He was caught immediately?

The man sat next to him went to catch him and he ran off. The guy chasing him told station staff, and they got him at the ticket gates.

Why did he do something like this?

He’s saying “I was dumped by the person I was going to marry in my twenties.” I have no idea what that has to do with sticking your fingers in someone’s mouth, but he’s also running his mouth about his victim being some kind of double for his girlfriend.

Any other charges?

Actually, there are seven cases of this on this line. There are other cases too. The guy is saying “I did it other times,” so we are checking it out.

You treating this as another chikan incident?

That’s a difficult one. But we can’t say his motive was obscene. The charges are causing injury. He wasn’t feeling her up or anything.

What kind of man is he?

A normal, serious type of guy. He lives alone with his parents. After working and studying he was set to enter university again this spring.

A man has been arrested for chasing down two women and flinging his own excrement at them, explaining that he had no female friends and was annoyed at work.

The 39-year-old construction worker, a resident of Osaka, drove past a woman on his bike one night, flinging his own previously prepared excrement into her face. A similar attack had occurred previously.

Soon he would turn himself in and be charged with assault, explaining that “I was pissed off at work. I didn’t have any female friends.”

All is revealed in an interview with an officer involved with the case:

There were no injuries but this was horrible!

About 01:00, a 20-year-old woman was returning from her part-time job. A bike drove past her, and the rider threw the excrement he was holding at her head.

Did he hit?

Yeah. Sadly, he got her splat in the face. He was coming past her, so it was more from the side than straight on.

Just where on earth did he put this excrement!?

It looks like he got it from an outdoor bowel movement he had just before the attack. He just held it in his left hand, got on his bike, found a random woman and threw it in her face.

He threw it with his hand…

It was probably big and hard enough to get a good grip on.

How did you catch him?

The woman before also reported an attack. Soon after he showed up at the station, and admitted everything saying “I can’t run any more.” He admits it all.

What was his motive?

He’s saying “I was pissed off at work.” We’re on the look out for bag snatchers riding bikes, but for something like this to happen, well…

A new Afghan law allows men to withhold food from recalcitrant wives if they refuse to have sex.

The law, a sop to the nation’s Shia minority, originally legalised rape within marriage, forcing women to have sex with their husbands at least once every four days, as well as eliminating the need for a wife to actually consent to sex.

Progressive elements within the nation and all civilised nations without it condemned it as being barbarously oppressive, and the Afghan president relented and opted to revise the law.

However, the revised version, which quietly passed into law, is seen as almost as bad, as it allows a husband to starve his female slave if she has the temerity to refuse his lusts, and also requires the woman to have permission from her husband in order to work.

Afghanistan’s western puppet president was supposed to be promoting civilisation and development, but observers say he is attempting to court Islamist conservatives in order to assure his election victory.

The dread Red Ring of Death has long been a feature of Xbox 360 ownership, but a recent survey reveals the shocking truth: the console boasts a failure rate of 54.2%, compared to 10.6% for the PS3 and 6.8% for the Wii.

Microsoft of course never releases statistics on its returns rate, so it has taken a third party survey to uncover the apparent rate. In this case, rag Game Informer surveyed 5,000 readers, asking them about the failure rates of the consoles they owned.

Microsoft’s notorious customer support and warranty system (the subject of a class action lawsuit which forced them to extend Xbox 360 warranties) also come in for criticism: the average turnaround for one of the broken consoles was nearly a month, whilst Nintendo and Sony managed a week. Satisfaction with Microsoft’s support was also a good deal less than with the others.

However, Microsoft’s blasé attitude to the pathetic reliability of its console appears justified: only 3.8% of Xbox 360 owners would never buy another Xbox because of failure.

A mother and her daughter have been arrested after instigating the 5 hour gang rape of a schoolgirl.

The incident unfolded one afternoon in Fukuoka, in an apartment belonging to a freeter. There a number of other young freeters would congregate, as well as a 41-year-old umemployed woman and her daughter (16), along with another 16-year-old schoolgirl, all known to one another.

During one of these gatherings the woman took exception to the schoolgirl, “not liking her attitude”, and took a kitchen knife and threatened the girl in order to “teach her a lesson” – the girl had apparently hit back after being struck, so punishment was felt necessary.

Taking their cue, the six men present joined in, and started kicking and beating the girl, seriously injuring her.

They soon progressed to raping the girl, in an ordeal which would last 5 hours. The mother lost heart at some point after seeing a girl the same age as her own daughter being violated before her eyes, and called police in order to stop the outrage.

Police arrived and immediately arrested the youths, along with the mother.

Those present, including the mother and her daughter, have variously been charged with assault, rape and gang rape.

A survey of Japanese men’s masturbatory habits reveals that most appear possessed of a pathetic libido, with a shocking 7% refusing onanism entirely.

The small scale survey was conducted on the readers of men’s magazine Men’s Non-No:

“How often do you do ‘solo-H’?”

Never!: 7%

Once every one to three months: 4%

Once every two weeks: 7%

Once or twice a week: 26%

Considering statistics generally show Japanese men to not get terribly much sex, the most optimistic interpretation, that they are too busy having sex, seems unlikely. The magazine asked to be sure, and found 60% of the men with girlfriends (less than half of them) had sex roughly once a week.

The most hopeful interpretation would probably be that the readers of the rag in question are the sort of effete types beloved of Japanese women, but again it is hard to be sure of this.

More pressingly, this rather raises the question of just what they are doing with all that porn…

Haruhi marketing rag Newtype promises a “major” Haruhi announcement in its coming issue, which hopeful Haruhi-ists have immediately speculated means a new season (which would almost inevitably include “Disappearance”) or at the very least a movie; more sober calculus suggests to some that this is merely another piece of abusive marketing for some trifle…

A lolicon has been sentenced to 17 years for attempting to seduce young girls online; however, he never succeeded in chatting to a real girl at all, instead chatting to a succession of undercover police officers.

The man, a resident of Indiana, hankered after young girls and so tried to arrange real life sexual encounters in likely sounding chat-rooms.

His first effort, in 2006, succeeded in striking up an incriminating conversation with “13-year-old girl” Amanda_13, actually an undercover police officer attempting to entrap any lolicon hapless enough to stumble into such a chatroom.

Soon he persuaded her to meet with him for sex, but when he showed up for the rendezvous he was instead greeted by a police snare.

Secret Service officers soon searched his computer, discovering chat logs of him talking to supposed minors, aged 13 and 15.

After convicting him, the secret service finally realised that “daisy13_Indiana” was in fact one of its own agents, prompting the lolicon’s defence to appeal on the grounds of entrapment.

The judges reviewing the appeal then recognised the name of the other girl he had been chatting with, “blonddt,” as being yet another undercover officer from an earlier investigation.

“To our surprise, the government was unaware until this panel told it at oral argument that the other screen name, blonddt, was also an officer from the Indiana operation.”
The courts upheld the conviction anyway, holding that the chat logs amply demonstrated he was hunting for loli sex.

His sentence of 17.5 years, along with a lifetime of state supervision, has been upheld.

He apparently never chatted with a real underage girl at all, perhaps demonstrating that such chat-rooms are now the exclusive haunts of lolicon and police alone.

A married otaku fan of eroge classic Kana: Little Sister had some explaining to do after his wife found out that he had named their daughter “Kana,” after the girl from the game, not after some a character from classical literature as he had claimed…

The man apparently harboured a great respect for adult game classic 加奈〜いもうと〜 / Kana: Imouto (available in English), and when he learnt his child was to be a girl, he knew “I had no other choice but to call her Kana.”

Since his wife had dibs on naming the child if it was a boy, he was able to name her Kana, telling his wife it was from a book he had read in which “Kana” was a “wonderful, good little girl.”

However, he had kept the game’s box underneath his keyboard, and his wife happened upon it and realised his deception.

When he returned he was confronted, and soon had to explain himself to his wife and both his and her parents; since they had no idea what an “eroge” was, he was forced to play it in front of them.

We do not hear what the results of this encounter were, but his rather optimistic speculation on 2ch was “Perhaps they’ll be so moved by it they will forgive me?”

Clearly, Miyazaki’s latest film Ponyo continued its massive sales run, bolstered by the huge numbers of mainstream commoners who adore Studi Ghibli’s films.

The most obvious observation to be made from the rest of the list is the popularity of the various re-released Gundam movies, all as part of the classic mecha series’ 30th Anniversary celebrations, heralded by the giant 1/1 scale Gundam statue.

Fan-favorite Char’s Counterattack, regarded by some to be among the, if not the, best mecha films of all time, being the most popular amongst these is obvious, although the ranking of the 3 First Gundam compilation movies might be odd…

The extraordinarily sharp falloff of anime DVD sales after the first week or so of sales is well displayed by the placements of the popular Haruhi-chan DVD 3 (released 07/31) coming in at #14 and the best selling all-time TV anime release K-ON! Vol. 1 (released 07/29) at the #20 spot.

A man is pressing charges against a woman he is accused of raping, accusing her of not informing him she had HIV.

The man apparently had sex with the woman at his residence in Helsingborg, Sweden, after the pair took a taxi there.

She alleges he lured her back to his apartment with a promise to give her the fare, then raped her. She allegedly begged him to use a condom, but he refused, and only relented and released her when she told him her children were waiting for her.

He alleges she was a prostitute who he drunkenly paid the equivalent of $500 to have sex with, and only pressed charges against him to avoid charges stemming from potentially having infected him with HIV, as she was HIV positive.

The man has not been confirmed as being infected.

Idol and occasional seiyuu Aya Hirano will be playing the role of デンデ / Dende, a young Namekian, in upcoming episodes of the newly remastered Dragonball Kai.

As the original seiyuu who played Dende, 鈴木富子 / Tomiko Suzuki, regrettably passed away in 2003 due to a heart attack, a new seiyuu was obviously required to perform in the show’s new vocal recordings.

While Hirano’s fame amongst otaku seems reason enough for her selection in the cast, it still has come off as quite a surprise online, especially as Hirano has mostly not done the typical young-boy roles female seiyuu so typically perform.
A man accused of having loli porn on his hard drive claims his cat downloaded the images.

The 48-year-old Florida resident was charged with ten counts of possessing child pornography after police apparently found 1,000 such images on his computer.

The man told police the images were downloaded by his cat, which would jump on the keyboard of his computer when left unattended, causing a variety of strange material to be downloaded.

Police seem not to be convinced his cat is at fault; he is being held in custody with bail set at $250,000.

A man has been arrested for attempting to strip a 10-year-old girl of her skirt.

The man, a 55-year-old security guard in Shiga prefecture, approached a 10-year-old schoolgirl in a bookshop one morning.

Rather than menace her by bidding her good morning, he proceeded to lift up her T-shirt and undo the fastener on her skirt.

His unfortunate victim reported having her skirt fastener undone, and police soon caught up with up with him, charging him under the prefecture’s anti-chikan public nuisance ordinances.

He offered by way of explanation: “I wanted to undo her skirt fastener.”

A Saudi businessman has commissioned the creation of a $50,000 diamond encrusted gold “penis enlarger,” the most expensive ever produced.

The man, identified only as an inhabitant of the Saudi Arabian city of Jeddah, commissioned the device specially from Canadian penis rack producer X4 Labs, who claim their products can increase the length of the male member.

Their “medically certified” penis extenders normally retail for a few hundred dollars, but the buyer in this case supposedly had a “a severe skin allergy to stainless steel” and so needed a solid gold device.

A woman who butchered her baby son, eating his brains and other body parts, did so at the devil’s insistence.

The 33-year-old woman, a resident of San Antonio, Texas, gave birth to her son three weeks prior, but motherhood soon gave way to grisly murder.

She used a steak knife to stab her son to death, then carved off his head and skinned and gutted the corpse.

She apparently also devoured his brains and ate several of his toes.

After finishing her macabre antics she attempted to commit suicide by stabbing herself repeatedly, but was soon hospitalised when police responded, and is now in a stable condition.

Her statements to police reveal she may well not have been entirely compos mentis when carrying out the crime; she claims to have heard voices and to have been told by the devil to do away with her child.

Police have charged her with murder, and set her bail at a million dollars. She may face the death penalty if convicted.

A motive, other than demonic compulsion, has yet to be established; acquaintances describe her as “a little odd,” but no substantive mental issues appear apparent.

English language eroge publisher Manga Gamer recently relaunched their site, and accompanying this is their flagship release KiraKira, a 2007 visual novel by OverDrive focused on the antics of a band’s trip through Japan, and with notably high quality art.

And, no....i won't add in any freaking artwork some others drew up....and some from Overdrive....really sorry for all those hentai freaks (you can't hide...you know you're one)...

Naturally, the game is not lacking in erotic content – the CG(not included here. Go search for it if you want) are from the Japanese release and so censored, whereas those in the English release are of course fully uncensored.

The title is firmly plot centred, so it will doubtless be of interest to those interested in the combination of romantic storyline with tasteful erotic artwork.

A furry has been charged with conspiring to murder his parents after he solicited a furry assassin by promising to let him bite off his penis.

24-year-old Christopher Monks, from Lancashire in the north of England, allegedly plotted the murder of his adoptive parents with 19-year-old Shaun Skarnes, of nearby Cheshire, after the pair met on a furry site.

Monks apparently fantasised earnestly about having his penis bitten off, and the bisexual couple hashed out a plan online after weeks of such interchanges.

The plan commenced with Skarnes paying a visit to Monks, who unsurprisingly lived with his parents. After playing computer games together, Skarnes pretended to get the train home, but in fact lurked for hours in a nearby park waiting for his signal.

Meanwhile, Monks watched a DVD with his parents and waited for them to go to bed. Once they were asleep, he summoned his furry assassin with a text message.

Monks’ father soon awoke in the early hours of the morning to discover the furry killer by his bedside, wielding a kitchen knife. He scuffled with Skarnes, and called for help. His wife, who had been sleeping elsewhere, summoned police and came to his aid; he explained what transpired:

“I thought he was trying to kill me. My wife tried to hit him with a stick but it broke. She then began to talk to him in a calming way. At that point, his manner changed completely.”
By this time a police officer had arrived, and Skarnes was promptly taken into custody. The father escaped with bruises, a cut palm, and, appropriately enough, bite marks.

Monks was apparently busily deleting the incriminating text messages while this occurred, and police initially thought of him as a witness rather than a suspect. However, soon they realised they were dealing with more than just the mania of a lone furry, and took him into custody as well.

The prosecution claims Monks was an avowed furry who fantasised constantly about having his penis bitten off, and offered this opportunity to Skarnes as payment for killing his parents:

“It may seem extreme that he wanted his penis bitten off, but there is ample evidence from websites he visited and conversations with Shaun Skarnes that this was a deeply held interest and one he found sexually stimulating.

It seems that Skarnes was to receive no money for killing Mr and Mrs Monks but the prospect of biting off Monks’ penis. This was the climactic act of the conspiracy.”

A pair of ladies who had been stealing bricks from a building were mortally surprised when the building fell on top of them, killing them and crushing a further 13 as it toppled into a neighbouring restaurant.

The thieves, apparently a group of five farmers who had migrated into the city of Liuzhou in China’s southern Guangxi province, had turned to stealing bricks from a derelict building nearby, digging into its walls to extract the bricks for sale.

However, it appears that they stole one too many bricks, for the entire building suddenly collapsed, toppling onto a neighbouring restaurant and crushing 13 of its patrons horribly, though they escaped death.

The brick thieves were not so lucky – firemen picking through the rubble discovered the crushed remains of two women in what was once the building. What happened to the rest of the group is not clear.

Cospa has announced its offerings to be sold at its Comiket 76 booth. One item is a very special K-ON! bowl, modeled after the even more special pantsu that have delighted fans everywhere.

Fans can now eat or drink out of delicious porcelain pantsu, or at least decorate the dinner table with it…

The bowl is actually a part of a K-ON! meal set to be sold for ¥5,000. Other goods in the set are: a lunch mat, chopsticks, a chopsticks bag, a spoon, a fork, inexplicable castanets, and a glossy bag to hold everything in.
They're all kind of......weird, so i won't post them, except the bowl.

Haruhi’s continuing Endless Eight story arc is exasperating fans, and the usual demented otaku antics ensue, with 2ch providing examples of otaku driven to destruction.

Their attention seeking antics aside, it seems clear Kyoto Animation and Kadokawa are treading dangerous ground, as it looks likely that the “Disappearance” story arc will not be included as promised (though we might wonder about its cliffhanger potential).

Coming on top of the previous marketing tactics this seems to be more than even brainwashed Haruhi devotees can stomach…

A detailed comparison of the Tales of Vesperia demos for the PS3 and Xbox 360 reveals that the PS3 actually has noticeably inferior graphics to the Xbox 360 beta which was circulated to paying testers some time ago. The PS3 version actually has a lower resolution than the Xbox 360 version, for reasons we can only wonder at…

Playable demos are often the first chance we get to check out gaming performance before the full retail or review code is made available to us. In the vast majority of cases, demos are actually produced after the final game has been submitted for evaluation to the platform holder, and it’s very rare indeed that there are any palpable differences between the sampler and the “real thing” in terms of pure performance.

So with that in mind, let’s take a look at Tales of Vesperia, the demo of which has recently found its way onto PSN… analysed by MazingerDUDE.

Curiously, the actual content of the demo is very different to what Xbox 360 owners got in their download, but there are several differences and similarities that can be discerned. Tales of Vesperia runs at 30FPS in the field sections, while the battle sections run at a crisp 60FPS on both systems. Similarly each version is v-synced, with no tearing.

Yup, a it’s sub-HD detail level resolved on PlayStation 3, with a bizarre 1280×576 resolution chosen for the game up against 720p on Xbox 360.

This results in a somewhat uneven form of scaling for PS3 owners, compounded by the anti-aliasing solution chosen: quincunx, which combined with the lower resolution adds a somewhat obvious, and unwelcome, blur to the game. For its part, Xbox 360 also uses a blur filter as opposed to a proper edge-smoothing solution, but with the additional detail level, the impact is not quite so distracting.

Away from the performance elements, and perhaps by way of compensation bearing in mind the delay in launching, Namco Bandai is promising a wealth of unseen content for the full retail release of the PS3 version, including new playable characters, costumes, quests and game areas, along with some level of interfacing with the forthcoming PSP release, Tales of VS.

Some related trivia: the only other sub-HD game we’ve come across that employs a 1280×576 resolution would be PS3 Soul Calibur IV, and even then, only when the game is forced to run in the 1080i/p compatibility mode (that is, with 720p disabled on the XMB), otherwise it is proper 1280×720.
Barring further upset, it appears gleeful Xbox 360 beta testers (at least those ones not smitten with Patty) get the last laugh in this bitter contest…

Weak, effete men and the improved social position of women in recent years are held to be amongst the reasons that a quarter of Japanese may soon pass their entire lives without ever marrying.

The latest trend amongst unmarried Japanese is “婚活 / konkatsu”, an abbreviation formed from the words “kekkon” and “katsudou”, meaning marriage and activity respectively.

Such activities, now well in vogue, try to create opportunities for meetings between the sexes for the ever increasing population of aging and poorly connected Japanese aspiring to matrimonial bliss, as it seems many feel an overwhelming social pressure to pursue marriage, and in yet in the normal course of their lives are never to able to court potential paramours.

A recent work by a sociologist and a journalist, “Age of ‘Konkatsu’”, attempts to analyse this trend, and presents findings which may disturb those Japanese keen to pursue married life.

Until now, the proportion of people in their fifties who remain unmarried their entire lives has stood at 16% for men, and 7% for women, however this is estimated to increase to 25% never marrying as the younger non-marrying generations age.

Factors cited in this trend are increasing numbers of passive men fearful of rejection, and increasing numbers of women with greater social stature, and less time to meet potential suitors. The work is presumably too circumspect to mention the economic expectations of women as a factor.

As a result, active attempts to find a spouse are said to be essential – it is the “Age of Konkatsu,” if this research is to be believed.

A man who was charged a staggering $23 quadrillion for a packet of cigarettes has fortunately managed to avoid paying the bill.

The New Hampshire resident bought a packet of cigarettes at a Mobil petrol station using his Visa credit card, but when he returned home he discovered he had been charged rather more than he expected.

Eventually he managed to clear up the matter with the issuing Bank of America, and was naturally relieved not to have to pay the bill.

Visa downplayed the blunder, described as an “inaccuracy”:

“A temporary programming error at Visa Debit Processing Services, caused some transactions to be inaccurately posted to a small number of Visa prepaid accounts.

The technical glitch, which impacted fewer than 13,000 Visa prepaid transactions, has been corrected and erroneous postings have been removed.

Importantly, this incident had no financial impact on Visa prepaid cardholders.

Visa regrets any inconvenience to our customers and has taken immediate steps to ensure this error doesn’t occur again.”

Mika-tan of Goodsmile Company updated her blog yesterday with more photos of the figurine in action. Nendoroid Reimu will come with interchangeable face part, hand parts, and props that let her banish youkai or enjoy tea. Her stand platform is modeled after her yin-yang orbs.

Perhaps it makes the efforts of earlier fanmade Touhou Nendoroids for naught? Not that fans will complain, assuming they can obtain one…

For those who can’t make it to C76, Mika-tan mentioned that other methods for procuring Nendoroid Reimu will be announced on July 23rd – this will include online ordering, though international availability is not clear.

Long running classic Inuyasha is set to be given a new series dealing with the as yet unanimated portions of the manga (which itself finally concluded after a marathon run some time ago).

The new series will see volumes 36 to 56 of the manga animated, so it looks set to be a long running production (the original anime ran for four years).

The anime is set for an autumn broadcast, by which time much additional information will doubtless have been made available.

The previous anime continuation made nary a ripple, but doubtless this will be a different matter…

The mother of a 13-year-old girl is suing a hotel after she said her daughter contracted a strange affliction from the swimming pool waters: a fetus.

The mother is requesting compensation from the owners of the Egyptian hotel for her daughter’s unexpected pregnancy on the grounds that there was stray sperm in the untreated pool water.

“The mother is adamant that her daughter didn’t meet any boys while she was there and is determined to go ahead with the case,” says one travel industry source.

Kama (鎌 or かま?) are Okinawan and Japanese traditional farming implements similar to a sickle used for reaping crops and also employed as a weapon. Before being used in martial arts, the kama was widely used throughout Asia to cut crops, mostly rice. It is commonly used in martial arts from Malaysia, Indonesia and the Philippines where it is found in many forms. The kama has also been used in Chinese martial arts but not often. From one or both of these areas the kama was brought to Okinawa and incorporated into the martial art Te (hand) and later Karate (empty hand).

The Kama is a formidable weapon, traditionally used in pairs, though in agricultural use it would be used one-handed, whilst the other hand grasped the stalks for cutting. Agricultural use of the Kama can be seen in Kurosawa's Seven Samurai during the harvesting sequence. As a weapon, both the point and sharpened edge of the metal blade are called in to use, Okinawan kata (forms) suggesting that the kama could also be used to block, trap and disarm weapons used against the wielder. The hard edge of the kama blade would traditionally be kept razor-sharp to enable efficient cutting of crops, which made it a lethal weapon in the right hands, though this is sometimes a cause of training accidents by unskilled wielders, for whom blunt training versions of the weapon are created. They were often used by ninja.

Kama are often included in weapon training segments of karate, tae kwon do, silat and more obscurely in some kung fu systems. It is also a popular modern forms competition weapon. Modern forms competitors often simply adapt their empty hand routine while holding kama with little actual kama technique, or employ elaborate weapon-juggling routines that differ radically from the focused Okinawan forms.

The kusarigama (鎖鎌?, "chain-sickle") is a traditional Japanese weapon that consists of kama (the Japanese equivalent of a sickle) on a metal chain (manriki) with a heavy iron weight at the end.

Though the kusarigama is derived from a farmer's scythe, and though the sickle was often carried as a weapon during the feudal era of Japan, these farmers did not carry kusarigama. Its purpose as a weapon was very obvious, so unlike a sickle, it could not be carried openly. The art of handling the kusarigama is called kusarigamajutsu.

Attacking with the weapon usually entailed swinging the weighted chain in a large circle over one's head, and then whipping it forward to entangle an opponent's spear, sword, or other weapon, or immobilizing his arms or legs. This allows the kusarigama user to easily rush forward and strike with the sickle.

A kusarigama wielder might also strike with the spinning weighted end of the chain directly, causing serious or deadly injury to his opponent while still outside the range of the opponent's sword or spear.

Kusarigama have also been employed as anti-siege weapons, with the chain allowing the weapon to be retrieved after it was thrown downwards at an attacking force.

Many fictional accounts of kusarigama sometimes show fighters swinging the sickle with the chain, rather than the weighted end. Though entertaining, this is usually not a proper use of the weapon, as the sickle is likely to bounce off a target without causing much injury. One of the few exceptions to this is the Hōten-ryū discipline of the kusarigama.

An elderly man arrested for sexually assaulting a schoolgirl protests that the mentally disabled girl in fact led him on like a precocious young Lolita.

The 71-year-old “unemployed” man, a resident of Kyoto, is accused of approaching the girl on the street, and calling out to her. She ignored him, so he came up behind her and pushed her over, and then somehow lured her back to his home.

Once he got her home, he mildly ravished her, touching her nether regions.

The elderly lolicon admits to touching the girl, but adamantly maintains “She enticed me into taking her home with me.”

When confronted with the fact of her being mentally handicapped, he retorts “I didn’t know.”

His crime came to light after the girl and her mother reported the matter to police.

Finally, i have a reason to read mangas.....or not? anyway. Manga art starts today and i am so...happy!!! The apparent possessor of the world’s strongest v***** recently broke her own v***** weight lifting record by hefting 14 kilograms using only the powerful grip of her intimate muscles.

Hatsune Miku’s latest figure incarnation looks set to become another classic, being both charming and possessed of some subtle erotic elements…
The figure itself is a 1/7 scale PVC depiction of Hatsune Miku, based on the standard Kei design. Release is due in November.
One of the unusual aspects of this figure is the use of “clear” parts – visible with the hair, arms and skirt, though perhaps difficult to discern with only photographs.
Compared to some of the other depictions we have seen, this one is perhaps rather more fleshy, with some particular care evident in her zettai ryouiki area and chest. No pantsu shots are evident, but the smart bet seems to be on shimapan…

Japanese woman crave more sex, and increasingly despair of what the Japanese media has dubbed “sexless” men; surveys reveal these women to be desperate for more, with some 80% of women surveyed hankering after sex at least once a week, but with only 40% getting it.

The survey, conducted by woman’s keitai site “Super Body”, targeted the site’s 300,000 members, mostly women in their twenties and thirties, and received 2,768 responses.

90% of these were in their twenties and thirties, and 65% were OL (office ladies, the female equivalent of salarymen) and similar, with 20% students and 10% housewives; respondents were both married and unmarried.

The most interesting findings of course related to the sexual habits and aspirations of the women:

A carpenter who accidentally sawed off his own penis is apparently embarrassed by the hideous accident, which according to his mother “happens all the time” to the people in his profession.

The man (54) was sawing wood when he somehow managed to saw his penis off.

An ambulance was soon on its way, and found him bleeding in his bathtub. After being rushed to hospital, surgeons were able to reattach his penis.

Speaking to journalists, his mother shared an unexpected fact about carpenters:

“Stuart is a carpenter and uses sharp and sometimes dangerous tools.”
She goes on to admit that it was an unfortunate accident, but hardly uncommon:

“This was an unfortunate accident but these things happen all the time to people in his profession. I have spoken to him and he is quite embarrassed about the whole incident.”

Nintendo is said to be planning to accommodate hopeless or merely impatient gamers who get stuck in games by making more of its games feature a “skip” feature, whereby difficult segments may be bypassed entirely.

The measure is to be concentrated on “action” games reliant on speedy reflexes, and will be featuring on both the Wii and DS.

The motivation behind it appears to be a desire to embrace casual gamers whose only experience of a “game” may be Wii Fit; previously some concern at the length of certain games and their ability to be completed by players with careers has prompted similar measures elsewhere.

Sometimes....i wonder......what is wrong with reading comics? Some give you a sense of humour. Anyways......some people don't understand my feelings.....so i'm going to talk about some weapons now.

HK MG3 or also known as the Rheinmetall MG3.
The MG 3 is a German general purpose machine gun chambered for the 7.62x51mm NATO cartridge. The weapon's design is derived from the World War II era MG 42 universal machine gun that fired the 7.92x57mm Mauser round.
The MG 3 is an automatic, air-cooled, belt-fed short recoil-operated firearm. It features a roller locked bolt mechanism that consists of the bolt head, a pair of rollers, the striker sleeve, bolt body and return spring. The bolt is locked securely by a wedge-like striker sleeve, which forces two cylindrical rollers contained in the bolt head outward, and into corresponding recesses in the extension of the breech of the barrel. On firing, both the barrel and barrel extension recoil to the rear compressing both rollers as they are cammed inward and out of their sockets by fixed cams, unlocking the bolt head. The bolt carrier and bolt then continue to the rear together guided by fixed guides while the barrel and barrel extension return to battery. Upon return of the bolt forward, the impact of the rollers against the camming surfaces on the breech carry the rollers from their seats, and, together with the surfaces on the striker sleeve, force the rollers outward, locking the bolt head into the barrel extension and ensuring a complete lock. The bolt also houses a spring-loaded casing extractor and ejector. Ejection is carried out when the ejector strikes the buffer head, sending a push forward through the ejector bar, which hits the ejector pin. This pin pushes the top of the base of the cartridge, which is still held by the extractor at the base, causing the empty casing to rotate and eject downward through the ejection chute.

The machine gun has an automatic-only trigger mechanism and a cross-bolt safety in the form of a button that is operated by the shooting hand (in its "safe" position the bolt release is disabled). The weapon fires from an open bolt.

The MG 3 feeds from the left side through a feed block using metal, 50-round continuous-link DM1 ammunition belts (which can be combined by cartridge) or disintegrating-link M13 or DM6 belts. In the light machine gun role, the MG 3 is deployed with a 100-round belt fitted inside a synthetic ammunition drum developed by Heckler & Koch that is latched on to the left side of the receiver. The rear wall of the drum is transparent and serves as a visual indicator for the amount of ammunition available. The feed system operates through a feed arm that is housed in the feed cover. Two feed pawls are linked to the front end of the arm by an intermediate link and move in opposite directions, moving the belt in two stages as the bolt moves back and forward during firing.

The MG 3 has a quick-change, chrome-lined barrel with 4 right-hand grooves and a rifling twist rate of 1 in 305 mm (1:12 in). The barrel is integrated with the barrel breech. The barrel should be changed frequently during sustained firing. The gun is cocked and the barrel catch on the right of the barrel shroud is swung forward. The breech end of the hot barrel swings out and can be removed by elevating or twisting the gun. A fresh barrel is then inserted through the barrel catch and the muzzle bearing. When the catch is rotated back the barrel is locked and the machine gun can resume firing. Both the receiver housing and ventilated barrel casing are made from pressed sheet steel. A muzzle device is mounted at the end of the barrel and it acts as a flash suppressor, muzzle brake and recoil booster.

The machine gun is equipped with a synthetic polymer stock, a folding bipod and open-type iron sights (sliding rear U-notch on a ramp with range settings from 200 to 1,200 m). A flip-up anti-aircraft sight is also provided.

In a stationary, heavy machine gun role the MG 3 is mounted on a buffered tripod called a Feldlafette and outfitted with a periscope sight that can be used to engage indirect targets.

FGM-148 Javelin
The FGM-148 Javelin is an American-made man-portable anti-tank guided missile fielded to replace the Dragon antitank missile.

Javelin is a fire-and-forget missile with lock-on before launch and automatic self-guidance. The system takes a top-attack flight profile against armored vehicles (attacking the top armor which is generally thinner) but can also take a direct-attack mode for use against buildings or fortifications. This missile also has the ability to engage helicopters in the direct attack mode.[1] The missile reaches a peak altitude of 150m in top attack mode and 50m in direct fire mode. The missile is equipped with an imaging infrared seeker. The tandem warhead is fitted with two shaped charges: a precursor warhead to detonate any explosive reactive armor and a primary warhead to penetrate base armor. The Javelin was used in the 2003 Invasion of Iraq, with devastating effects on the Iraqi version of T-72s and Type 69 tanks.

The missile is ejected from the launcher so that it reaches a safe distance from the operator before the main rocket motors ignite; a "soft launch arrangement". This makes it harder to identify the launcher and allows it to be fired from within buildings; however, back-blast from the launch tube still poses a hazard to nearby personnel. Thanks to this "fire and forget" system, the firing team may move on as soon as the missile has been launched.

The missile system is carried most often by a two man team consisting of a gunner and an ammo bearer, although it can be fired with just one person if necessary. While the gunner aims and fires the missile, the ammo bearer scans for prospective targets and watches for threats such as enemy vehicles and troops.

Luger P08
The Luger uses a toggle-lock action, which utilizes a jointed arm to lock, as opposed to the slide actions of almost every other semi-automatic pistol. After a round is fired, the barrel and toggle assembly (both locked together at this point) travel rearward due to recoil. After moving roughly one-half inch (13 mm) rearward, the toggle strikes a cam built into the frame, causing the knee joint to hinge and the toggle and breech assembly to unlock. At this point the barrel stops its rearward movement (it impacts the frame), but the toggle and breech assembly continue moving (bending the knee joint) due to momentum, extracting the spent casing from the chamber and ejecting it. The toggle and breech assembly subsequently travel forward (under spring tension) and the next round from the magazine is loaded into the chamber. The entire sequence occurs in a fraction of a second. This mechanism worked well for higher pressure cartridges, but cartridges loaded to a lower pressure could cause the pistol to malfunction because they did not generate enough recoil to work the action fully. This resulted in either the breechblock not clearing the top cartridge of the magazine, or becoming jammed open on the cartridge's base.[2]

In World War I, as submachine guns were found to be effective in trench warfare, experiments with converting various types of pistols to machine pistols (Reihenfeuerpistolen, literally "row-fire pistols" or "consecutive fire pistols") were conducted. Among those the Luger pistol (German Army designation Pistole 08) was examined; however, unlike the Mauser C96, which was converted in great numbers to Reihenfeuerpistolen, the Luger proved to have an excessive rate of fire in full-automatic mode.

The Luger pistol was manufactured to exacting standards and has a long service life. William "Bill" Ruger praised the Luger's 55 degree grip angle and duplicated it in his .22 LR pistol.

M40 Rifle
The M40 is a bolt-action sniper rifle used by the United States Marine Corps.[1] It has had three variants — the M40, the M40A1 and the M40A3. The M40 was introduced in 1966. The changeover to the A1 model was completed in the 1970s, and the A3 in the 2000s.

Each M40 is built from a Remington 700 bolt-action rifle, and is extensively modified by USMC 2112 (Armorers) at Marine Corps Base Quantico, using components from a number of suppliers. New M40A3s are being built, and A1s are upgraded to A3s as they rotate into the armory for service and repair. The rifles have had many sub-variations in telescopic sights, and smaller user modifications.

The original M40 was a military type-classified version of the Remington 700; it was factory-made, and had a one-piece wooden stock. The M40A1 and A3 switched to fiberglass, with new scopes. The trigger pull on both models (M40A1/A3) is 3 to 5 lb (2.3 kg).

Prostitution is said to be rampant in Japanese schools, with schoolgirls of ever younger ages selling their bodies for extra spending money, both to adults and amongst themselves.

Prices for girls in elementary school are said to have dropped below ¥3,000, leading some to wonder what has and will become of the nation’s public morals…

In many cases the prostitution is conducted through “deai-kei” sites, often relationship focused BBSes designed for use with mobile phones.

In one illustrative case, a middle school boy pimped out a thirteen-year-old girl for over ¥60,000 in total using such a site, whilst other schoolgirls used the site to sell their bodies themselves.

With these sites facilitating enjo kousai (“compensated dating”) to an unprecedented degree, a whole culture (or industry) of schoolgirl prostitution has sprung up, with girls being called “JC” in the slang of the sites, and with the large amounts of money involved encouraging involvement in the trade.

In a similar case to the above, a boy in middle school is said to have advertised “Recruiting JC in Kanagawa. You can make a lot so anyone looking for dates come to me,” and to have pimped out a 16-year-old girl for ¥40,000.

Such prices are said to be the exception rather than the rule, and prices drop even further when pupils engage in prostitution amongst themselves, or when they are younger, with high school students selling themselves to one another for a paltry ¥3,000, and middle school pupils charging even less.

These sites have been subjected to increased police scrutiny amidst a major police crackdown, but it appears that many sites have no difficulty in operating discretely without police supervision posing a problem.

Nationwide filtering of children’s access to the Internet is touted as a solution, and is now in effect, but it seems this rather underestimates the ingenuity of such children, particularly when large amounts of money are at stake.

The girls selling their bodies in this way have apparently been getting younger and younger, with elementary schoolers now increasingly turning to prostitution as an easy way of accumulating pocket money; an account of which is provided by the clinic:

“The age at which kids are getting into sex is getting lower. Even girls in middle school are becoming very sexually active. A high school boy came in recently with a second year middle school girl recently, and the pair had been sexually active. The boy asked me to tell his friend about STDs, although at least she was with a good boy.”
However, promotion of condoms has apparently kept pregnancies to a minimum. Even so, some girls are blasé about the matter, and are happy to be pregnant. Even teachers are said to turn a blind eye to pregnancies rather than have to get involved.

Additionally, sexually transmitted diseases appear to be making an impact. Disturbing reports from healthcare professionals indicate that in some clinics, up to 30% of patients were in their teens.

One case is described in lurid detail:

“There was a girl in the fifth year of elementary school who was doing enjo kousai, she was a groupie for talents. Her pantsu were always soiled [with blood], and she kept coming in with Chlamydia.”
The clinic staff warned her to stop having sex, but she persisted, and kept returning. Eventually she stopped visiting the clinic entirely.

Amongst university students the practice of such informal prostitution is said to be even more common; Japan’s womanhood has at some point apparently became a mass commodity, and it is difficult to see any reasons why this should be the case, at least ones more helpful than “because they are harlots”.

It does however seem the traditional approach of only blaming the men (and boys) involved, and then subjecting them to criminal sanction, has only created a culture where schoolgirls boldly hawk themselves with impunity.

Possibly it may be time to consider why it is these girls are so ready to sell themselves for additional pocket money, and whether it is indeed appropriate to absolve them of all responsibility for their actions…

Why won't women, or for that matter, girls, kiss on a first date?

A survey of whether Japanese women may feel inclined to decline a kiss on a first date reveals some coy feminine tactics at play, with the most common response, “try to modestly refuse him once” perhaps being a near universal female stratagem…

The survey itself posed the question “how would you respond if a guy tried to kiss you on a first date?” to NicoNico Douga’s large and youthful female population in a popular women’s programme aired regularly on the site. In 200 seconds some 18,000 responses were gathered, and the results are instructive.

The most common response, with 46.3% of the vote, was “try modestly refusing him once,” demonstrating perhaps that these ladies are less interested in effete and unassertive males than they are sometimes portrayed as being.

After this came the more submissive “meekly let him” with 31.6%, although it should probably be thought that the question presupposes the woman wants the man to kiss her in the first place.

The dread “refuse him” comes in with only 19%, indicating perhaps that fast movement may not go unrewarded.

Interpreting these results is of course a minefield unto itself; the editor of a male dating support site gives his interpretation: “The woman wants to test whether the man is really serious, and she is concerned about being thought an ‘easy’ girl,” which does indeed sound a universal female tactic.

However, where Japan is concerned there seems to be a more fundamental issue: are these assertive men, ready to press for a kiss, even that common anymore? The editor once more sheds some light on this:

“The impression I get from managing this site is that men are becoming more and more cowardly about romance.

A schoolboy who by his own admission groped dozens of ladies has revealed unusual reasons for selecting only older women in his perverted crime spree.

A woman has been found guilty of decapitating a man in order to make his head into a soup with which to cure her daughter’s mental illness, which she had her daughter drink.

The woman, a resident of China’s Sichuan province, apparently believed her mentally ill daughter could be cured of her affliction if she were to drink some healthy human head soup.

To this end, she first got a 76-year-old into a drunken stupor with the aid of a friend, and then bludgeoned him into unconsciousness, after which she cut off his head and, with the aid of her husband, cooked the head together with duck into a tasty soup.

She then had her 25-year-old daughter drink up the soup in the hopes that her long running condition would be cured. Her daughter was apparently non compos mentis at the time.

Despite her efforts to dispose of the bloody remains of the man, she was apprehended and tried, and was recently found guilty.

She has been handed a death sentence, but in an uncharacteristic display of leniency the courts offered her a reprieve in the form of a stay of execution, meaning if she can keep out of trouble for two years she will merely be sentenced to life imprisonment.

We do not hear whether her daughter’s condition was improved by the broth

Rumors have surfaced that this is all an elaborate marketing scheme by a Belgian radio station, especially after the now defunct “Kimberlizer” online application (so named after the girl) surfaced, which allowed people to use their webcams to place the array of stars on still images of their faces as well.

The Kimberlizer domain is reported to have been purchased long before the girl’s sparkling face ever even graced news outlets, and the MNM radio station is said to have had exclusive interviews with the girl when she was turning down other news outlets.

The kidnapper says of his crime: “There was a little girl crying, so I asked what the matter was. She said she wanted to go to her granny in Misato’s, so I took her with me as I was headed over that way”.

It appears the girl had been scolded by her mother over the unspecified matter of a textbook, and became upset and left her house alone.

An Akihabara maid café has just begun a week long promotion for the upcoming release of the PSP version of Fate/Unlimited Codes.
As we have seen with the same café’s previous Chaos;Head event, this means liberally decorating the cafe with all sorts of series-related accessories and creating a new menu to create “image” dishes for certain characters.
The impetus for the event is the June 18 release of Fate/Unlimited Codes Portable, the PSP port of last December’s PS2 version, which was mostly noticed for the supremely detailed Figma that was included with SP box of the game.
The restaurant, CURE Maid Café, has made these sort of promotional events into a habit, as they always seem to be converting the café into a new theme every few weeks.
This new Fate theme is a good example of what is usually done, although the fact the event only begun yesterday regrettably means that cosplay photos have yet to begun circulating online.

Classic fighting game series King of Fighters is set to receive a grand Hollywood adaptation in the glorious tradition of Street Fighter and Dragonball.
The movie uses actors nobody has ever heard of, and in the best tradition of Hollywood dispenses with the game’s highly developed setting and atmosphere in favour of some story centring on mysterious multidimensional alien artefacts.
The extremely stylish 2D character designs are perhaps one of the major selling points of the series, so naturally Hollywood has discarded them. Their loss seems unlikely to be well received by fans, especially considering what they have been replaced with.

OH MY GOD!!! NEW REPORT JUST CAME IN!!!

Some 70% of Japanese girls are victims of sexual assault by the time they reach 18, it is claimed.

The ludicrous claims, made by a feminist speaker addressing a local symposium looking to tackle the odious problem of domestic violence, and subsequently reproduced in notorious rag Mainichi, are as incredible as they are misandristic:

“Close to 70% of women are victims of sexual assault before they reach the age of 18, with chikan raping and indecently assaulting them, along with other sexual crimes, en masse. The culture doesn’t take the female gender seriously.”
Men like to prey on innocent young girls, she tacitly asserts: “Young children are not very suspicious of people. Adults must protect them, as they can easily be scarred for life.”

She then went on to accuse men of being incestuous brutes: “There are many cases where fathers and stepfathers victimise their own children.”

She presents no evidence or sources to support these claims, and they fly in the face of statistics compiled by the Japanese government, the UN and independent research groups, to say nothing of common sense; even in the likes of the UK, Canada or Sweden such levels of sexual violence are ridiculous.

As a wag on 2ch (A source) puts it, the remainder who haven’t been outraged by wicked males must be the 10% who are too ugly and the 20% who are hikikomori…(i have no idea what's that either, but i'm guessing......flat-chested???)
